I'd like to hear your opinions on the SOG FastHawk.

I saw a stack of FastHawks at a store for $20 apiece. Is this a decent short hawk? How is the balance, fit and finish, steel quality, etc?

I don't want a FastHawk. I want a SlowHawk. Gimme a longer handle please! :D

I just picked one up at Wally world for $20. The blade seems small and as the above poster said, its handle is a little short. I am very new to this type of axe, so i may have the wrong tool for the work i will be putting it thru. At $20, it can't be a bad deal. Balance seems fine. I will report back after it gets some use.

edit: the S&W may be a better size for what i wanted. This SOG may be fine for camping.

I picked one up a while ago and I find it's a good thrower. Took some getting used to but it's a fun lil' tool. The edge doesn't keep well though.

I would like a longer handle. I do like mine fine the little I have used/played with it since I got it. For $20 I think it's a good tool. Wouldn't through it though, if you break the handle it looks like it will be a pain to replace/get another one. I'll stick with CS's if I want to through a hawk.

Mine wasn't as sharp as I wanted it, but that was an easy fix. The blade is coated with some clear very hard gunk that I'm still trying to get off of it. I wanted the spike a bit sharper also, again, just a little file work and it's much improved.

Not sure if I'll tape the handle for grip yet or not, need to eval that some more before I spend time doing that.

Overall, for $20 I'm happy. Think it will be a good tool for the times when weight matters.

Seriously--if they made it with a 20" handle I'd be all over it. Light overall weight with the mass concentrated on the end of a long lever = chopping awesomeness.

Have you considered buying the Fasthawk and the full size version and just swapping the handles? I'm not sure if the holes for the screws would line up or not, I'm just tossing the idea out there!

The regular one's handle is still too short for me. I'm into the idea of hawks as tools rather than weapons, so a longer handle makes a lot more sense to me. Hell--make it 30" and stick a metal spike on the end and you'd have a real nice ciupaga/fokos!
