I'd like to humbly offer a Sprint Run idea to Mr. Glesser and Co...

I would love to see Spyderco come out with a Peel-Ply Carbon-Fiber S90V Caly 3.5 sprint run. Can we make it happen, please? :D

I recently got myself a couple UKPK's because I noticed the G-10 models are not in the 2011 catalog. I love G-10 and I also love the ergonomics and simplicity of the Caly series and thought "what they hay?"

Let me just say that out of all of the amazingly ergonomic designs I own, which include the Para, Military, Delica/Endura, Manix 2, Sage series and the Native, the UKPK and the Caly 3 and 3.5 have to be my favorite, by far. Don't get me wrong, I love the ergonomics of all the knives I listed and it's nice to have a larger handle but something about the way the Caly and the UKPK's melt in the hand makes them my favorite knives from an ergonomic standpoint.

The wire clip, slim profile, simplicity and light weight make the Caly's and UKPK's amazing EDC choices.

Not gonna happen...Caly 3.5 is an Japanese knife, and for Japanese knives they can only use Japanese steels. There was some talk of something in Super Blue (a high-end carbon steel with lots of tungsten). I'd personally like to see a variant with the same materials as the Caly 3 CF--Laminates ZDP (I think it's better to go laminated for such a thin grind) and CF. Peel ply CF would be really cool. That'd be my choice probably, peel ply CF and ZDP. BTW, I love the Caly 3.5 as well. Was just carrying it yesterday, and every time I use it it's a pleasure.

I agree, the ergo's of the Calypso Jr. descendants (caly's and UKPK) are some of my favorite. I love the more open choil (people talk about "deep" choils, but I prefer a wider one..maybe it's my fat fingers :D). Along with the Stretch 2, and those you listed (although I don't think the Delica and Endura ergo's are quite as refined as the others), there sure are some incredibly comfortable knives that spyderco makes! I'd say the Caly and UKPK series are my favorite choil grip. My favorite regular grip is probably the stretch 2, although the Manix 2 and Para 2 give it a serious run for its money. Sage has a great balance between the 2 grips

PS-Can't wait to try out the Superleaf's grip as well! Judging by pictures, it looks incredibly ergonomic! I got one coming in early April, can't wait!
PPS-Yojimbo 2 as well...while it's a ways down the road, that's one that really strikes me as very ergonomic. It looks like they did an excellent job really refining the original design..they seem to have a knack for that--see the Para 2, Stretch 2, Caly 3 and 3.5, Manix 2..it's amazing how they can take awesome designs and make them even more awesome.

Caly3.5 is one of my favorite knives and I carry it every work day. I certainly would love to see up-scaled variant as sprint/limited run or regular production. Unfortunately as it said above Caly3.5 and S90V is not likely to happen. Japanese companies prefer to work with Japanese steels, I saw some of them using Swedish steels, but mostly in Kitchen knives. I am not really interested in variant similar to CF Caly3. I do not care much for this finish of CF and absolutely hate uneven laminated lines. For some reason all my Spydercos with laminated blades had very uneven lines. Of cause, if Spyderco would make Caly3.5 with nice natural material handle, this will make me less picky about steel.

I have to agree about the wonderful ergonomics of the Caly 3.5 (as well as the other variants, I assume). It's just incredible the way that knife fits in my hand in various grips. That combined with the big blade with the ultra thin grind that is an amazing slicer in the slim handle that just disappears in a pocket makes this knife one of my top two favorites along with the Para 2.

The Para 2 has great ergos too, of course, but in a more robust way that is ideal for more heavy duty uses. For me, the Caly 3.5 is pretty much a perfect design for urban EDC (except for not having screw construction), although I also would also like to see an upgraded version with CF and ZDP-189 or perhaps Super Blue.

Well said. I realize the knife is made in Japan currently but why would the sprint run have to be made in Japan? Is it because all the tooling and jigs for them are in Japan and would have to be either fabricated here or sent here from Japan to make them? Just curious.

I love ZDP-189 and I've heard good things about that blue steel so either one would be fine with me. I'm just thinking along the lines of a peel-ply carbon fiber with an exotic steel in limited numbers so I can feel special.

Hi Undertow,

As Mentaculus mentioned, it's complicated to use US steels in Seki. I will say that we have a Caly 3.5 in Super blue (Gray peel-ply G-10) in-the-works and we're considering a Carbon Fiber ZDP versions.

I'm so happy to hear this!!

I'm so-so on the super blue...might even pass, even though I love the Caly 3.5

However, the ZDP/CF one I am extremely excited about!! I hope you use laminated ZDP again (just think it works better for such a thin grind. Peel ply CF like on the Stretch would probably be my choice, but I love the texture you used on the Caly 3 as well! (I guess you could call it a glossy texture)

Can't wait! You run such an incredible company...I just feel privileged to be aware of you guys and to have a the money to buy as many of your knives as I can!

Sign me up for one of each. I've really been looking forward to the SB steel in a folder. Excellent choice.

Great news, I'll also be getting both models for sure. However, I hope the zdp is not laminated with such a soft steel, my Caly is full of unsightly scratches (but I'll still get one even if it is).

Sal,

I'm honored that you responded and I'm ecstatic that those knives are currently cooking. I love G-10 and carbon fiber equally as well as the steel choices you mentioned and would love any combination of them.

I'm gonna be famous for starting SA (Spydercoaholics Anonymous) and then relapsing for the rest of my life.

I was holding out hope for a version with bolsters, and I'm a bit surprised to see peel-ply CF as a scale material for this knife, but I guess I can always just smooth it down myself. (Haven't got around to smoothing out the G-10 model yet, I guess it's grown on me. ^_^)

Hardwood or Micarta scales with stainless bolsters, a la the old Persian designs (though not so heavy), is still my fantasy handle for this blade. I know that the cost would be a bit scary, though (especially given recent developments.)

+1
I will buy at least two Caly3 or Caly3.5 with nice wood or linen micarta and bolsters. This is like Kopa on steroids. Near perfect knife. VG10 will be fine for me.

I rathar see a version of the "underrated" Scorpius... Scorpion coloured g-10 etc. that should make an interesting knife...

Grey g10, super blue steel, sprint run..the place I pre-ordered says eta in late July, is this accurate?

Super Blue for the win. :D

Well, since we're matching sprint colors up, can we get a Gray Military with CTS-20CP? :D;):D:thumbup: Pleeeaaaase?

Keep the sprint runs coming!
