I bought a half shoulder of leather from Tandy about a year ago and some Fiebing's dye, some stamps, sinew, and needles.
I have a few other tools I've picked up for stitching and chamfering edges.

Just wondering where you guys that make leather sheaths learned. Books? Youtube?

Thanks for any recommendations.

Get one or more of the Art Stohlman books from Tandy. That's where I started. Lots of fantastic, basic info ther. Then it was a lot of messing around on my own trying to make stuff, and picking up tips from much better makers online. I made a lot of ugly stuff at first. You will too. Keep going and it will get better.

This is how I started:

Here is a video series from Diomedes Industries a member here. As a university professor he is quite good at explaining the process of making a pouch sheath.

Part B

Part C

Part D

Part E

Part F

This is a thread where he presents a tutorial with lots of info to get you started:

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations fellas, and thanks for the links Chuck.
Much appreciated!
I figure I'll ruin alot of leather learning just like I ruined a lot of steel learning how to make knives, but this reading should help the learning curve.:D

My first sheath was right out of Bob Loveless' book. After that, I found this forum and went through the tutorials. That provided the basics, then I got Paul Longs videos. rtmind/randy

I have three of Paul Long's videos. I agree with others that have posted. Grab a pencil and paper, get the remote in hand, and sit down to watch. You will need to pause them frequently to catch all of the details and information that free flows while Mr. Long works leather and talks.

I learned strictly from youtube, mainly Ian Atkinson and Justin Wolfe. But you'd be surprised at how quickly you can consume hours and hours worth of instructional videos when it's something you are really interested in. You also need to be making things as you are learning, so you get both "in field" and "classroom" experience at the same time. I learn SO much from each mistake I make. And I wouldn't make mistakes unless I was actually constructing things and working with the leather.

Paul Long's videos sound like the way I'll be going.
Thanks very much everyone, I'm grateful for the help.

Good deal Josh. Also remeber, once you get going, there is a LOT of help here.

I got Shane Alexander to come to my school and teach my students. Then I secretly learned while watching over his shoulder :P Actually I learned how to stitch first watching youtube videos and made a flute bag. Then Shane came and showed how to design and create sheaths.

I learned from Ian Atkinson. Also, perfect practice and clean lines.
