I'd just like to take a moment to thank those of you who contribute and answer newbie questions with patience and honesty. I have literally spent hours upon hours reading information on this forum, using the search feature and reading some more. I have posted a few questions here and have always received straight forward honest opinions.

Because of the information I have found here I am confident in my ability to tell the difference between a well made knife and a poorly made knife. I feel I am an informed consumer when it comes to the different materials used to make a knife. Though I am far from being any kind of expert, I feel I at least have a good solid foundation on which to build thanks to this forum and it's members.

Based on information and techniques I found here I have successfully ripped apart an old Lansky system I had and modified it with a piece of 2X4, a door hinge and some scrap metal to make a useable sharpener. I have also turned an old belt into a decent strop. (Can't afford to buy anything more for awhile, un-employed since May) Best of all.....it all works (I'll be damned!). I actually sharpened some (4) knives today...sharp enough to easily shave hair off my arms. That has never happened before....at least not on purpose.

I have also ordered the book "The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening" because of the recommendations here. Eventually I will probably buy an EdgePro to replace my home made jobber.

Anyhow, sorry for being so wordy and corny, but thank you.

Sincerely,
Mike

Dunno if I helped or not, but I'm glad to hear you're started down the slippery slope here with the rest of us :D . Newbies who want to learn are always welcome in my book.

Yam...It's good to see another Washingtonion chime in here. Welcome to BladeForums.:).

I remember when I first joined BladeForums. If it wasn't for all the patient replies I got to my questions I would probably not have felt much like hanging around. To tell you the truth, I really enjoy answering new members questions and consider every one of them to be worth the time it takes to reply. It really upsets me when someone replies rudely to a newbie question. If you think that a question being asked is inane then you should refrain from posting and go one to a thread that is more in tune with your great store of knowledge. That way you won't show all the other members here just what kind of a jackass you are.

Anyway, it is good to see that you have found your time here to be a learning experience.
