I'd just like to take a moment to thank those of you who contribute and answer newbie questions with patience and honesty. I have literally spent hours upon hours reading information on this forum, using the search feature and reading some more. I have posted a few questions here and have always received straight forward honest opinions.
Because of the information I have found here I am confident in my ability to tell the difference between a well made knife and a poorly made knife. I feel I am an informed consumer when it comes to the different materials used to make a knife. Though I am far from being any kind of expert, I feel I at least have a good solid foundation on which to build thanks to this forum and it's members.
Based on information and techniques I found here I have successfully ripped apart an old Lansky system I had and modified it with a piece of 2X4, a door hinge and some scrap metal to make a useable sharpener. I have also turned an old belt into a decent strop. (Can't afford to buy anything more for awhile, un-employed since May) Best of all.....it all works (I'll be damned!). I actually sharpened some (4) knives today...sharp enough to easily shave hair off my arms. That has never happened before....at least not on purpose.
I have also ordered the book "The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening" because of the recommendations here. Eventually I will probably buy an EdgePro to replace my home made jobber.
Anyhow, sorry for being so wordy and corny, but thank you.
Sincerely,
Mike
