So I'm in the market to try to find the perfect fishing knife for myself. I probably fish 100+ days out of the year, it's a passion and a requirement for me today. There's no telling where I'll find myself fishing, no one great followed the rules and didn't explore uncharted territory. That said, I've found a core set of attributes I'd like in my perfect fishing knife. #1) relatively stainless. #2) self defense worthy. #3) Aggressive partial serrations or sawback. #4) Good chopping capability/toughness. #5) 5" minimum blade length. #6) Folder would be great!😆 Seriously.😐

Lemme know what you think! I'm not at all familiar with a lot of knives is why I'm asking. I've kinda just been bitten by the knife bug really. Thanks for any suggestions, ideas, help etc. 👍🏻

Like I said, folder if possible. That's very ideal. My desired attributes are as such since I often find myself wanting to chop cat tails, reeds, weeds small branches and/or possibly saw a decent sized branch off to access water or clear space to cast. Never know who or what I could run into out there (bigfoot, zombie deer, leatherface) so hence the self defense capability requirement. I figure nothing under 5" is going to chop well so...

Leaf shape fully serrated Spyderco Carribean, or the Siren.
Not a 5 inch blade length but would check all the other requirements.

If you are fishing from the bank I doubt you need a marlin spike. As someone who used to access fishing spots on dirt bikes, I suggest a good quality smaller backpack that you can store what you need. A machete is hard to beat for reeds/branches and a folding saw is great for branches. Pliers or a multi tool are useful for hook removal, repairs, etc.

I have pannier bags and a large fishing tackle bag on my rear rack. So I guess I should just get the folding saw and maybe a smaller machete and quit dreaming of the forkoontula of pocket knives.🤦 The more I think about it what I want doesn't and can't really exist.

Paniers even better. A fixed blade like has been suggested in a horizontal sheath is very comfortable riding as well as easily accessible while straddling a bike. There are very tough folder’s that don’t cost much (Like Cold Steel Max Scout), but other than taking up less space, I would prefer a fixed on belt with a folder or 2, and a multi tool and machete on the bike. I am biased with machete’s because I was raised with them in Latin America, but I have used them extensively in TX, MT, ID and here in AK. They are just an amazingly useful tool and there are many choices. A small folding saw from Silky and you are good to go. There are so many excellent knives both fixed and folding for an all around field and fishing knife. Find something you like and carry it. If you don’t like it, you likely won’t carry it so handle as many as you can. We all have favorites and what works for one may not be ideal for another. Good luck with your quest.

well, if it has to be a folder, the police4 partial serrated might do the trick -> 4.1" blade is quite large on a folder

but... the correct choice (imho) is the 5.9" fixed mora 150 fishing fixed blade - they know a thing or 2 about making amazing value knives - can you believe you can get this for around $35 ??

Game wardens aren't a concern for license holding catch & release anglers such as myself.
Yeah… that’s what they all say until they meet one that starts putting the squeeze on ‘um. 90% of 80% of game wardens hide drugs in the rectums of fish that swim up to Canada. They don’t take kindly to you slowing down the progress.

That’s when you pull out your Opinel slim #15 with hand-filed partial serrations.

My microtech combat troodon single edge has been the best fishing knife I've owned. Meets most (all?) of your criteria.

It's a good sized knife. Can be had in partially serrated blade. I've used it to hack thorns/branches and cut small limbs and clip line.

I love that you never have to adjust your hand position when opening closing, especially in precarious spots in/over water with hands full of other things (rods/line/net etc.) .
