Recently picked up an old Carpenters hatchet weighs about 26 1/2 ounces , 4 1/2" cutting edge , length from edge to back of poll is 5 11/16"
The very faint stamp on the bevelled side has a shield image on it , inside the shield is STEEL printed on the bottom right , above that is a banner on the diagonal with the first 3 letters HAR then unreadable but room for several more letters. The poll end is chipped on both of the sides , then with a strong magnifying glass shows these chipped sides to be coarse grained inner iron. It seems to have been case hardened with a shiney thin outer layer. So it is a cast head rather than forged .
Maybe someone knows the maker by the shield stamp ? and age range , the cutting edge is still sharp-ish but jagged as was found at the local treasure shop
------- ----- ---
The second hatchet is a rather pitted on one side in a few spots, Made in Sweden , one side of the eye is quite thin at only about 3/32" thick and then tapers to 1/16" thick side wall at the openings and it has a curious cut in divot at the top side . For 50 cents it will be interesting to see how it holds up to normal use - I won't be pounding on it with that one side of the eye being so thin.
