Thought I'd post a pic of my Mocotaugan or crooked knife. I'd say it's pretty traditional.

It was made by a good friend of mine. Black Thunder Studios. I need to get a pic of the woven birch bark sheath he made for it as well.

A traditional tool, often used in Canoe-making, it functions something like a one-handed drawknife.
Very traditional!!

Oh yes, and what a beautiful looking one too.

Please do share some more pictures!

Please share more photos of this. Perhaps some background as well? Would like to hear the story behind this knife...

Cool! First Ive heard of it. Gives a whole new spin on reverse grip "swayback"
Also some hints of Puukko crosspollination, both in the scandiish blade, and the birch bark sheath that some Puukot share.

Crooked knives are actually chisel ground.

beautiful .promptys the question when does a knife become a tool? ie specialised desgn.

To answer your question from wayyyyyy back in April, John, I think if it goes "bang" it's a gun, and if it goes "cut", it's a knife!!
:D

I just received this in a complicated trade involving Southwest Native Turquoise and Silver, a Sheffield Pruner, a Birthday present, an old Remington 2-bladed Stockman (single spring Clip and Spey), a German (Nazi) Helmet and some boot!!

Man thats awesome!

I agree, flyer. I don't collect this type of knife, but it really grabbed me! It came from a collection of North American artifacts. It is well used, the wood showing lots of handling, and the blade is obviously thinned out. Hard to tell how old it is. . . . .

Here are three that I have made for canoe builders up here in the wilds of Canada. All made from old files with slightly different blade shapes.

Nice old knife Charlie with a different and interesting bit of wirework.

Best regards

Robin

Man those are nice ones Robin.

Since I started this thread I've gotten another. This one is about 3/4 the size of my other. He made a bunch of smaller ones to make then easier to carry in a pack.
