ID Skinny Buck!

A neighbor found this little buck and sheath recently and gave it to me. It only says "Buck" on the blade. No other ID that I can find.

Can anyone identify it? I've never had a fixed blade knife that was so small and with such a long, skinny blade!

Thx,

David,

Since the sheath is a "keeper strap" and not a "flapover" wouldn't that make it earlier than 1966. If so, although you can't tell from the photo, it opens the possibility of a barrel nut 102.

David is right, it's a model 102 Woodsman but as Bertl says, I think it might be a little earlier than 1966. Flapover sheaths start late 63/64. The spacers look fiber, along with the keeper strap sheath I put the knife 62/63. Closer to 62 if a barrel nut and 63 if pinned.

The earliest factory knives, about 1961-1962, had a threaded tang and were assembled with a hidden nut (barrel nut) in the end of the pommel. From about 1963 onward the pommel was pinned onto the tang thru the side.

Wow slipperhead,

That is a nice find and in very good condition! The guys above nailed that one a 102 barrel nut is not an easy find these days. If I were you I'd send that knife to Buck for what we call a SPA job. For about $7 Buck will clean and polish that knife to look like it was just made, that price includes return shipping back to you.

Better buy your neighbor a cup of coffee for giving you that awesome old Buck knife!

Before we get too excited, I said a barrel nut was possible and Roger said it was possible and showed a photo of a different knife. I think you ought to get it cleaned up and check for a barrel nut. Either way it's a great find.

You gents are right. I went and dug out my keeper strap sheaths and they hold barrel nut models, 1963. So a few years earlier is possible, even if it's not a barrel nut. DM

Thanks for the info, gentlemen! I had no idea what a little gem this is. With no model number in the blade, i thought it might have been a knockoff!

I will check for the barrel nut. I didn't realize Buck offered spa service. It will be off to them the first of the week!

Just post us a photo on the arrangement of Desoto's and we'll give you more info.. You're welcome. We really obsess over the early models. DM

I agree to sending it to Buck for spa treatment. Be sure to post return pictures for us to drool over.

Yes, this does help. The barrel nut construction was discontinued in mid 1963. Thus, your 102 was manufactured during the second half of 63 to last quarter of 1966. As the flap over sheaths started that year as well. Without a sales receipt, additional papers and the box, it's a guess we could get any closer. So, I was on firm ground on my first estimate of you knife's age. Still, a very good find. DM

David,

My notes say the flap over sheath started about 1964.

I was going by the hand outs from the Buck Collectors 20 year reunion and Heath Stone's comments. Can we meet at 'sometime in 1965'? DM

David,

Okay. Year plus or minus considering the records isn't a big deal.

Bert

Advertising in 1965 introduced the flap-over sheath.

This would mean some were around in 1964 when they did photos for that catalogue.

As with most things Buck........no satisfactory answer.

:)

Changes never happened on a Monday, January 1st, or with all models at the same time...... :D
