Hey guys. I was out on the motorcycle today when I saw a random knife sitting in a back road intersection. I stopped a picked it up. Seems old, only says "hammer forged" made in USA. Just wondering the manufacturer purpose and possibly age.
I'm assuming its a butcher knife since whoever sold it in this site says so. I believe this is the same thing I have. Any idea what kind of steel it is? Thanks guys

Looks similar or may even be an Old Hickory which is 1095 carbon steel

Thank you. Any idea of the maker or age? Is there a maker that didn't say on the blade? I see some have maker stamps.

I was looking at this last night on my phone. Although it looks exactly like an Old Hickory, it's not stamped as such. i'm sure there were companies who copied the Old Hickory knives, I have one I believe is a copy. I was told mine (bought from a neighbor's estate sale) was around 50 years old when I purchased it. It's carbon steel, gets really sharp, best kitchen knife I own. Google Old Hickory knives, I believe they've been around a pretty long time.

Could be Shapleigh's. Age could be as old as 1843 to as young as 1934 but i'm just guessing. Old hickory's blade logo looks different and I'm not even sure about Shapleigh. Cool knife. Seems like a very rare find since the only people selling them online don't really know what they are.

Can you take a picture of it vs. the sites? If it's the same size as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X4GwCjRM8k than I'll agree with crom on it being some type of copy.

I'll keep digging.

Quick search revealed Ontario started putting out Old Hickory knives in the late 1800's based on the popular butcher knives that had been in production even before that. So who knows? It's a nice knife for sure, use it!

I can take pictures when I get home. How do I post them? Nowhere does it say old hickory or any manufacturer. I only see hammer forged made in USA on the blade. It looks exactly like an old hickory but I'm guessing the blade is .5-1.5 inches longer.

The following photos are not mine but so you could see what it looks like here it is. My oldest knife I'd say that's worth mentioning is a Kinfolks V-44. If you go to http://www.kinfolksinc.com/knives/military.htm you can read about it. One like it was actually sold on Pawn Stars

I actually just saw an image of what it looked like in the kit. I'd give anything most likely for the actual full kit...would look awesome!
