This is a little off-topic.

A friend of mine who lives in Boise, Idaho has another long time friend who lives to be in the outdoors. One of the passions he has is taking his dogs to persue mountain lions / cougars in the Idaho mountains. He is not hunting them, just chasing/treeing them. It's similar to some folks I know that take their black and tan coonhounds out for the evening chasing racoons only to hear the dogs bay and spend time in the woods, never taking a 'coon.

These dogs and the big cat parted ways with only a little dander raised. I thought they were awesome pictures and figured I'd share them with you.

Kitty looks a little unhappy.

If you compare these dogs (that are probably 80lbs) to the cat, you can see that he's a big boy!

Enjoy

RED-X's gone?

I copied and pasted from SRKW and was afraid that would happen  I could see the pics, but since I didn't load them in this forum, it must not have recognized the pictures.

Those freaking huge cats run from dogs that are smaller than them? I've gotta get a dog :D

I know it's hard to believe, but it's the numbers thing. I've heard of Rhodesian Ridgebacks (African Lion Hounds) actually catching and killing large male Lions. Hard to imagine.

P.S. - if you are seeing red-x's and you are on dial up, try refreshing the page a couple times. I was "timing out" and I was getting the red-x's too, but when I refreshed, they came back. :D

I agree with the number thing when it comes to cats. That is why I like to carry my Glock 27 loaded with Cor-Bon and 2 extra mags more than my Ruger SP101 five shooter when in the back country :D . Cat populations are getting out of control here in Oregon since they banned hunting with dogs.

Man, that is nuts about the Rhodesian Rigdebacks ganging up and taking out a male lion. I recently saw and .avi clip showing a male lion getting its claws on a large Hyena. The ferocity of it sent a chill through me.

I've seen what a pissed off 8 lb. cat can do to a man, that big boy would f*&% you up!

I understand the cat population in California is getting out of control as well and they are getting more and more bold, attacking cyclists, etc.

When I was in Kalifornia, I usually packed my 686 .357 when going out. Problem is where some of these attacks are occuring, one can't legally carry.

Went camping one time in the middle of nowhere out Forrest Hill Divide near Auburn, CA and about 11:00 p.m. my blue healer made the most hair raising growl I had ever hear him make. Didn't know what I was going to see when I opened the tent. Turns out I was right near a deer thoroughfare and there were about 10 whitetails staring at me when I hit the Maglite :D What a relief. There were supposedly some cats and even some bear in the area.

If I went back there, I'd probably have the 12 ga. and might consider getting into the camper shell, just to be safe (it was off a trail that 4wd was needed to get up to). Here in Alabama, not many worries of those things, but they are around.

P.S. - these pictures didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. The originals are excellent quality.

If that dog and the mountain lion were to tangle ass, I think I'd have to put $20 on the cat... thats one bad looking pussy cat...

NYResQ, I concur. Would not take that bet!

Deciduous, I lived in San Diego back in '95 and there were a couple cougar attacks in the local mountains. I felt very uncomfortable NOT packing while hiking in those same hills. That is a nice little .357 you've got and a great choice for a trail gun IMO. Thankfully in Oregon there are some common sense gun laws that let you pack. Cougars are such good stalkers though I'd feel lucky to get the hole in my gun pointed in the right direction in time :barf: .

Last I camped in a tent in the Central Cascades very early in the season and was the only person around. I had a similar experience with "things" walking around my tent and was so relieved when I jumped out of my tent with my dukes up and found they were just deer. Not much sleep on a night like that.

I received this e-mail that has been passing around. I don't know any details or even who it was from originaly. The following is the text and the pictures from the email:

These pics came from a guy in AZ. Yes, the mule killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after one of the dogs. The cat ambushed them, and the mule pictured tossed its rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not. Unfortunately, it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics. The mule finally stomped the cougar to death after biting and throwing it around like a rag doll. The dogs wouldn't even come close until the mule settled down

The cat was still alive here and trying to fight back

The mule stomped the cat then pinned it to the ground and bit the heck
out of the dead cat several more times.

The cat was pretty much dead by now then mule picked up the cat again whipped it into the air again then stomped the dead cat again for good measure!

Note the dog audience . . .

Gregg,
Those pictures are absolutely spectacular, shots like that are priceless..

Those Mule shots are mind blowing. I’ve bred, rode and broken in horses all of my life and never seen the likes of that.
I did see a Jack Donkey and a Brumby Stallion fight to a near finish on the edge of a desert once.
Amazingly after the fight the Donkey caked mud all over his wounds on a bank of a dam, the stallion was no so cleaver..
