Howdy,

I bought some firesteel blanks from Going Gear, and love them.

I was going to make a custom handle, but didn't have time before my weekend outing to the hills. So I started brainstorming and came up with this idea:

It is the cushioned barrel from a cheap ball point pen. The firesteel is the 3/8"x4" model (Badger).

It really worked good and seems very secure and snug.

I had to take appart and try a few different pens to get one I liked and that had the right inside diameter.

By the way, the striker is the best one I've ever used. I highly recommend getting one (or two!).

cool idea...did u glue it or is it just friction fit on? also, how do u like that striker?

So far, I just have used friction. I chose one with a tight fit and the rubber grips really well.

The striker is Awsome and was just under $2! I'm going to buy several more the next time I order.

I like it....the big downside of other firesteel handles is not being able to use both ends of the steel....now all you have to do is slide it to the other end.

Nice idea. I used some paracord wrapped and glued around one of my ferro rods. I like your idea better though.

I used a piece of fatwood for the handle on my firesteel. It makes a sort of self contained fire starter.

Great job, CC! I bought some squishy foam pencil pads with the idea of using them as grip material on little knives like the Buck Hartsook. I just put one on a firesteel and it works great. I heated a piece of coat hanger wire and poked it through so I could thread the lanyard back through.

I have been doing a cobra knot with the inner strands of paracord removed and it works fantastic. Holds tight and feels good to the hand plus who doesnt have extra 12" sections of paracord laying around....
