Howdy,

I also posted this in the wilderness & survival skills forum.

I bought some firesteel blanks from Going Gear, and love them.

I was going to make a custom handle, but didn't have time before my weekend outing to the hills. So I started brainstorming and came up with this idea:

It is the cushioned barrel from a cheap ball point pen. The firesteel is the 3/8"x4" model (Badger).

It really worked good and seems very secure and snug.

I had to take appart and try a few different pens to get one I liked and that had the right inside diameter.

By the way, the striker is the best one I've ever used. I highly recommend getting one (or two!).

Like the handle. It looks comfy. I wasn't sure about those strickers but now that you said that I might give it a go.

I would imagine that one could use "Plasti Dip" from the hardware store. It's meant for tool handles, but people use it for a lot of other things, too.

Actually, I found some G-10 Rods with a tapped cut out in the center and the site offered in a multitude of ID and OD Diameters, I think that would be a wonderful material to work with
