So, I've been looking at the Helle Temagami. (I wanted a traditional looking knife with a full tang, and their Scandinavian sheaths look very nice.) However, while looking at reviews, I heard from many different places that the laminated steel they use in their knives can't strike a ferro rod on the spine, but instead they can only strike a firesteel on the cutting edge (where the harder steel is exposed.) They do have jimping on the spine, but Helle has stated that that is only for extra grip when using your thumb on the spine. I was wondering if it would be possible to file away the soft steel on the spine for about an inch of the spine's length and expose the harder steel, then square that off so that you wouldn't have to sacrifice your edge to strike a ferro rod.
