How about giving the customer the option to pay a little extra (20-30 bucks per knife) to have Mr. Glesser himself (or his son, just as well) quickly (maybe a minute for a knife, at the most) inspect a knife in that particular knife model for quality defects before it gets shipped to the buyer, through Spyderco directly?

Spyderco makes really good stuff, but ocassionally a knife sneaks by that wobbles a little, or whatever, so this would in effect cut down on customers waiting and shipping knives back. Not to mention it would give the knife additional collectors value and custom feeling.

Spyderco could call it "Sal's Special", or some other (less cheesy) name.

:D

Honestly I think Sal and Eric are too busy to do this at any price.

And I think that each collector has their own definition of perfection. I don't think that I even notice some of those things that make some people create posts about an "issue" with their knife.

We'd see people complaining about how they paid $X extra for a Sal Special and it has this or that imperfection that they discovered by inspecting it with a magnifying glass.

If we are going to go this route, let's go all the way!

How about an independent, 3rd party grading service? They do it for coins, cards, and comic books (of which I have quite a few), so why not knives?

Get a few "experts" together, maybe Guild members, guys like Sal who started their own company, etc. Have them hash out a grading system and grading standards, which will be cussed and reviled by everyone, LOL.

Ship your knife in, get it graded and sealed in plastic, then sent back to you with the knife name, maker, and grade printed on a label. Oh, damn...how are you supposed to cut stuff with it?

Well, it would be a good idea for knives that have been "retired" from use and are just going to be kept in a safe, or maybe sold. But, then, you'd have to figure out how to keep it oiled in the plastic and prevent rust before you pass it on the the buyer....hmm.

Anyways, just a few thoughts!
