Idea: Mnandi with a front-flipper?

I've owned a couple Burger knives and the front flipper is simply amazing, IMO. I'd love to see it offered on CRK folders.

The Inkosi almost does it. I can open mine with slight difficulty just using the jimping. It does not have the leverage to flip, but using the thumb you can rotate it into position that way. I agree I would like to see it offered on CRK's but I don't think its going to happen.

It's probably the most elegant solution to the one-handed opening method problem for folding knives. Nothing protruding perpendicular to the blade/handle axis; nothing to prevent full use (or sharpenability) of the edge as is the case with studs, discs, holes.

Corytr is that a Classic or 21? The small 21's I have had could not do that. the shape of the scales on the blade end block it before I can get it open. I have never had a Classic though and it is a slightly different shape over there.

My Inkosi I can do that about as well as you demonstrate.

On my regular if I catch a nail right in the last grove of the jimping I can make it happen but not like you are doing.

Ha! That's not me. I found that video on the interwebs. I can open my 21's (large and small) and my 25 like that. The 25 is a bit easier due to the sharper jimping. It took a lot of practice to get it down though.

I expect the 25 is like the Inkosi and should be somewhat easy. Don't know why I could not open my 21 that way but I don't have a 21 left around to try it with.

Also a no-go for me with the Mnandi but with the sharp nick on my old model its not needed to front flip. I would be happy with the added feature of a front flip Mnandi, but don't see CRK doing it. Heck they changed the nick to make it harder to one hand open on the S35V models.

A front-flipper would have fewer machining steps and wouldn't require a huge re-engineering of the finely-tuned manufacturing process at CRK. It's also not quite the stop-pin banger that a Carson-flipper is either. I think there are lots of good reasons to produce a front-flipper model of some sort (even though the Sebenzas somewhat allow it already). I'm certainly not trying to tell CRK what they should do, but I do believe such a product would sell very well for whoever makes a really good one readily accessible to the market. There is, as far as I can tell, only one production front-flipper out there at the moment and that appears to be a limited run.

I've heard about this and did a little digging. I believe it's more a function of the new detent, as seen in this helpful thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...i-vs-New-Style-Mnandi?p=12307058#post12307058

That said, I do like the old design nail nick a lot more, aesthetically speaking.

I have had both Mnandi. The old nick has a sharp edge that bites into your thumb while opening it. The new model is rounded over and polished. It was speculated it was to make it more of a two hand opening knife to make it legal in more areas. I don't have a damascus model and have been told the nick on those are fairly easy to open.

In any case I would love to see a more true front flipped from CRK in a Mnandi or larger model. I also am not going to hold my breath for it.

I'd bet that Sebenza in the video has a very light detent and sanded/polished washers...

I wonder how many times he sliced his hands up while playing with the knife like that. Not judging of course, I play with mine way too much and got bit a couple of times doing it! :D

You may be correct about this, Driften, but I have my doubts it was changed for those reasons.
These days my EDC is a Mnandi in my pocket with the clip removed. My opinion is a "no" on a flipper. Of course I am a long time slipjointer so two hand opening is second nature to me.

If CRK made an smooth unassisted flipper, it would probably be my only knife. I love my CRK knives, but I carry my flippers more and more often because they are just easier to open. To me, a CRK flipper would be no brainer. If you didn't like, don't buy it. At least you would have the option. Long, long overdue in my mind.

I should clarify my opinion, as I never used the front flipper on either of my Burger EXK1s to "flip" the knife open. I just used it in a controlled manner to open the knife. It was a very natural method to open the knife.

Yeah, I was thinking of that too. Front tang opener doesn't really roll off the tongue though.
