Idea... slip-clip, pocket saver

I don't really know if this is a new idea, but I don't believe I've seen it before.

Many people complain that their textured G10 or otherwise grip textured knives tear up their pockets, and so make an effort to either detexture the knife, or loosen the clip.

I was thinking... what if you made a new deep carry style clip, but instead of stopping the clip where it screws to the knife, you continue that side of the clip down to the tip of normal clip part (basically, it would look like a really wide hairpin with a couple of screwholes sticking out).

If you gave the bottom section a little bend towards the knife, this would make for a very smooth, very secure clip capable of hanging on to just about anything very well without damage. Since it is two opposing pieces of stainless/titanium, it would be ultra smooth on and off of your pocket.

Thoughts?

I'm mainly asking because I'm considering a JYD II, but the clip is just wrong.

I think that's a great idea. As long as the knife sat deeply, I don't think there would be any problem with in-pocket retention. Shouldn't be that much more expensive to manufacture, and if it is, knife companies could call it an "ultra clip" or something and charge a premium. I'd pay it, depending on the knife. I hate pocket-shredding clip/handle combos, especially on my work slacks.

I've seen clips like those years ago at office supply stores. I can't remember what they are called. I'll search a little and see if I can find out.

Yep, pretty much. Add mounting holes as necessary, etc. I might whip a fancy one up in cad if I get bored later.

I've got a new Benchmade Bone Collector on the way, so it may be a good test piece for me. I don't know if I really care for the clip design on the bone collector.

You could even screw through the top section of the clip into the bottom with clearance holes, so it would look really clean and stay light. You'd have to use button head or flat head screws though to keep them smooth.

Here is something along the same lines as you were thinking

That's a different solution to the same problem, but neat. That one allows you to de-tension the clip when taking it in/out of pocket.

What about - if one is happy with ride height, just adding a separate flat piece sandwiched
in between the frame and the OEM clip? Most fasteners are long enough to accomodate another thin piece.
Heck, certain models could probably just get an additional OEM clip and hammer it flat. :P

This reminds me of a style of flashlight clip. It allows tip up or tip down carry if the clip attaches at the open side (not the curved side of the U).

With a flashlight, it lets you carry the light bezel down in your pocket, but also clip the light to a baseball cap. I can't really see the advantage for knives, though. Most people prefer either tip up or tip down. This way you'd only have one set of holes drilled in the handle, but I don't think the extra set of holes is a big deal.

The main problem with this type of clip, at least on flashlights since I've never tried it on a knife, is that it has too little retention. It's also much harder to tighten than a normal clip because you'll tend to crush it.
