IDEA: Spyderco Slip/Switch?

Idea I had. Call it something like the Spyderco Slip/Switch.

Think of how many guys want to use or own a premium steel. Yet cannot afford to. Some just want to compare a few. Cut tests and edge retention.

It would be a simple/minimalist handle. Like the slip it models. Retail $36. Because it is naturally a slip joint or something simple like that. It's legal in most areas.

Then you would be able to slip or lock into place the same blade with different steels. Using torx or some type of locking unlocking blade slip or switch option. One cheap good steel, then , S30V, 35VN, M390, CTS XHP OR 204. Whatever is easier to obtain. Each blade would run $20-80?

Maybe this is a stupid suggestion. It's late and I'm typing with one eye open. Ha

This would be a folder. Simple like the UKPK. so many guys want to be able to try or have better steels. They just can't afford the higher end models.

There was already some discussion a while back about this. I'm pretty happy with the MT.

There already is a folding Mule team in three different versions.

True, but there are places where Spyderco is afraid to ship slip joints and others where they occasionally get confiscated by Customs. No platform is perfect, but the current Mule Team series seems to satisfy a fair percentage of those who want to try out different steels, plus some folks who are just looking for a simple entry level DIY knife project. None of that is to say that the idea of a folding Mule is bad, just that there'd probably be less interest in it than there might have been 5 years ago.

You know what would happen though? You would buy one knife handle with the intent of buying lots of blades in the steel choices you are interested in thinking you would just swap them out, but in the end, you will end up with as many knife handles as you bought blades because you wouldn't want one of the blades to not have a home. So really you just get smaller cheaper knives in premium steels.

There are cities where you can't legally carry a slipjoint with a 2 3/4" blade. What's that got to do with it?

For the record, the UKPK only looks simple. Ask Sal how much fun it was to engineer it. And if you happen to find the planet where your price-points are feasible for anything less than large volume production, let me know. I'd like to move there.

While I think that it's a neat idea, I know that Spyderco's not a huge fan of users taking apart their knives. I can see people stripping a whole bunch of screws and needing additional parts they they damaged while disassembling the knives.

Again, though, I think that it's a neat idea.

I would be all for a folding series of the mules, but it seams pretty redundant and I can't see spyderco doing it
