Ideal depth of pouch sheath, how much handle to leave protruding?

Just curious if there is a general idea or rule of thumb for pouch sheaths and how much handle to leave exposed to remove the knife.

I made my first sheath the other night with 4/5oz leather from hobby lobby (just practicing) and think I made it a bit too long for the knife.

Will post pics in the morning.

What do you guys usually do?

Craig, just rule of the thumb, I leave about a thumb and two fingers grip on the knife outside the sheath on a pouch style.

If your pouch sheath is too deep, you can also put a lanyard on the knife to help with the draw. I do like a deeper pouch style sheath just for pure retention purposes.

Thanks for the tip, I would rather have too much depth than not enough and risk accidental removal of the knife.
