I'm currently trying out an Applegate-Fairbairn Covert Folder as a replacement for my Kershaw Ken Onion Black Out as my carry pocket folder. I have been extremely happy with my Kershaw, but have wanted to add the Covert to my collection for some time now. We'll see which one makes the cut as my "everyday" carry.

Now on to an "everyday" fixed blade. I need something that is reliable, concealable, and under 4". In that class I've seen the Benchmade Nimravus Cub, the Cold Steel Spike, the Camillus Boot Knife. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I would greatly appreciate the input of other knife enthusiasts in this important decision.

Jim,
How well does this carry? The ones I've looked at tend to have a straighter blade (like the Nimravus or Spike), which are easy to wear. Can I ask your experience with this piece? THanks for the suggestion, regardless!

The best 'discreet' everyday fixed blade carry I've come across is a Fallkniven F1 in a Concealex sheath by Normark.

You have hit on one of the Hot style of knives today "Neck Knives". One of the reasons they are so hot is that they're an inexpensive way to move from production knives up to handmade knives, that may be something you want to consider. Check the For Sale by Makers Forum, it Mike L6 Cooper still has some of his 'Wharncliff' neck knives available you should get one. For $50 they are a great buy and he'll even engrave your name on it.
I have a Darrel Ralph 'Arclite' and a Kit Carson 'Damascus F4' coming, both great makers.
I'm more into traditional knives and my "Ideal Fixed-Blade Carry" isn't a neck knife or designed for concealed carry. It is legal with a 3" blade. I wear it in plain sight (just to show it off) without a problem. I get as many compliments on this knife as any knife I own. The maker is Russ Easler.

I had a knife made by Easler a few years ago, but foolishly traded it off to Tom Carey's Father. I wish I had that one back; it was ground as nicely as anything I have ever seen. No guard or anything, just nice wood slabs and a perfectly ground blade. Sometimes it dont need to get any better than that.

In the "neck knife" category, I already own the CRKT Stiff K.I.S.S. I like this one a lot, however, because of it's light weight I don't know how much faith I really want to put in it if push came to shove. I used to carry a Camillus Boot Knife on my belt, and I felt pretty confident in that blade, and I'm looking for a replacement for that type of knife. (A friend "borrowed" that one, and I'll certainly never see it again.)

Bill Siegle recently delivered two knives to me that are proto-types for a design I am calling the "Daily"

Japanese Wrap Handles, Western Profiles.

I think this approach is a good one, I will post a review with images shortly.

Bill also has a number of chisel-ground neck knives available currently....

I am currently enamored by Neil Blackwood's designs. I have a Medium Tactical/Utility on order myself.

From there I would look at Bob Dozier's catelog. From there, just browse around the web until you find something you like.

Nothing beats going to a big knife show and actually handling some knives though.

I really like the REKAT Pikuni. It is a great size for everyday carry. I often carry it instead of a folder. It has d-2 steel and a great concealex sheath made by Mike Sastre.

Another excellent choice is the Camillus Talon. If you dont want to splurge on the talonite version Bladeforums is offering a 154-CM version.

The Stiff KISS is a solid piece of steel. Exactly what kind of "pushing & shoving" were you planning on ?

I own the CS PeaceKeeper II & CS Recon Tanto, but of course I can carry neither one of them on a regular basis. However, I'm looking for a feel in my hand more along the lines of these, hence my looking at the Nimravus and the like. I've got big hands, and the KISS's handle is quite short in my hand.

Hey shootist16, that REKAT Pikuni looks *rather* nice. I wish I knew of a blade store around me that carried it so I could get a feel for it.

There are 2 more knives you might take a look at: Camillus' version of Darrell Ralph's Arcangel, and the soon to be released CRKT Polkowski/Kasper knife which will have both neck and belt sheaths, for around $35. Believe most of the Camillus knives are selling for $20. The steel in both is the big question. The Camillus is 420 HC and the CRKT is the eternal AUS6. Both are considered to be considerable bang for the buck.

I dont exactly know what you look for in a blade, but I love my TOPS SS. Its small but it already has the nickname of "crowbar"! Plus TOPS is one heck of a company. Its not a long cutting edge, but I wouldnt be afraid to do anything from survival work to fighting with it. I wear mine on the back of my pants with the sheath inside. No one knows its there but me and pulls with the blade already in position for use (im right handed), although any would if the sheath is made like this. Dunno, just another one for the list/consideration. NW

I too would look into the Pikuni. It is a great little knife. And the steel is great!

It slices, it dices, it.....oh, nevermind...lol.

There are a lot of knives out their that would suit your needs(desires?) and all you have to do is pick the one you like the most.
Not so hard, eh?

Good luck.

Didn't like the Nimravus as much as my brand spanking new GERBER YARI! The concealex sheath and clip is great for IWB carry. If the handles weren't so thick it would make a pretty nice neck knife as well.

Quarterstaff,
Happy with his new toy.

It hurts to be on the cutting edge.

:
The little Marble's Fieldcraft is an often over looked little carry knife, but the handle may be to small for you.
And you can get a kydex/concealex sheath made for it from some of the guys here just like you want it.
They're 52100 steel and hold an edge
very, very good. They're also hell bent for stout.
