Ideal Handle Length

What do you consider to be the ideal handle length for a 3" and 4" blade - should it be the same or should there be a balance.

I have found that no matter what job I'm doing, my hands are always the same size, so my suggestion would be to keep the handle length the same for different jobs.

IMO a lot will depend upon the particular knife, its intended application(s), and the individual user's hand.

That said, I decided some time ago that 3-1/2" is the absolute minimum handle length I can accept on any knife. Under that I just can't get a solid, comfortable purchase, and the utility of the knife is severely compromised.

An excellent point!!!

However, there are times when a different grip than your usual grip would be better and at those times a longer or shorter or fatter or thinner handle might be helpful.

For example:

I have a Becker BK9 and I am one of the people who thinks that its handle is extremely comfortable. For a 'big chopper' I think it has the perfect shape.

I also have a Henckels 3 1/2" paring knife. I don't think it's perfect, but its a nice comfortable knife for doing 'detail' kitchen work.

My hands are always the same but I wouldn't want to have a Becker handle on my Paring knife or vice-versa.

So, to answer the original question:

It's a matter of personal preference of course, but I think a 3-4" blade should have about a 4 1/2" handle. That's what feels best for me.
