ideal knife dimensions?

Is there an ideal?

I like a blade about 3 1/2" and a handle about 4 3/8".

This has an elegant look to me. With good balance.

Any other ideas?

It depends on the type of knife.

I prefer a hunter with a blade length of aprox. 4 3/4" and handle aprox 4 1/2"

I prefer a midsize bowie/fighter with a blade length of 7 1/2" and handle 4 3/4"

I prefer a full-size bowie/fighter with a blade length 0f 9" and a handle 5".

I don't really care for a fix-blade with a blade shorter than the handle.

No such thing as ideal dimensions. It depends on the type of knife, it's intended use and the owner's personal preferences. That's what's great about custom knives - every knife you buy can be your "ideal" knife.

I agree with all that - but, the human hand is a certain size. For a personal, utilitarian size isn't there a sweet spot?

However - that's the beauty of custom knives - you cn get exactly what you want!

Not really. Human hands come in all sizes, as do Ideal Knives. That is why we make more than on type. In more than one size Mike

Spoken like someone who has never shaken hands with Danbo. :p Seriously, though - hands are no more a "certain size" than people are. They vary quite widely. And even if you have two different people with exactly the same size hands, their personal preferences may dictate decidedly different handles. One guy might light a straight, slender handlewhile another might prefer something beefy with a pronounced palm swell.

Dan Farr wrote an excellent article in Blade a couple issues ago on elements of handle design - a topic that he nows a thing or two about. It's definitely worth a read.

For a utility/hunter, I prefer a blade about 4 1/2" and a handle of about the same length. For a camp knife I like a blade about 7" and a handle of 4 1/2" to 5". Bowies I like with a blade 10" or more and a handle that is 5" to 6". The choppers that I have found to work the best have blades between 10" and 12" and handles about 5". With the handles I have found the way they are shaped to be more important than what size they are, as long as they are long enough.
