Thanks, Vassili.

If money's not an issue, why don't you go for a custom made to your specs?

I'm at a loss as to why the high-end fixed blade market is dominated by production knives. You can get your own design made by a well-reputed knifemaker for less than what some of the companies usually associated with high-end production knives charge. And you can expect the custom's fit and finish to be at least as high as the production knife's.

I think a good part of the attraction of a knife from someone like Chris Reeve or Jerry Busse is that you can know it will perform up to their established standards. These are not simply production knives. They really are semi-custom in the attention they get before they leave the shop.

Not everyone is familiar enough with a particular custom maker to be sure the quality will be there. That's the value of asking on these forums, but just saying "custom" doesn't really point to a maker in the price range with the routine excellence the buyer would hope for.

If you are in the market for an indestructable and gorgeous custom knife you may want to check out some of the fine work from Graham Knives.

I'd have to agree with Quiet Storm, that if money were no object, (as in, someone else was paying for it, or I won the lottery) I wouldn't even consider a production blade. Just my personal choice.

It would certainly have a pattern welded blade, all fittings would be engraved and gold inlaid, the handle would be ivory or something, fancy sheath to match, and... I'd use the hell out of it! :D

It's not even primarily a money issue.

Let's compare a few similarly sized knives that all fall into the category of combat/utility blades:

Chris Reeve Green Beret Knife (5" version) - $289

Strider MT-10 (cord-wrapped) - $325

...and a handmade (just an example):

David Mosier Bowie - $250
It's "only" ( ) 440C though...

You could ask David to modify it in accordance to your needs, I'm sure he'll make you a very reasonable offer.

I own a Mosier knife (not this one though) and can vouch for its excellent design, fit & finish and sheath (the latter seems to be a weak spot of some high-end production offerings).

True but the only problems i have with custom knives is the wait sure theres no bowie in production that will match a custom like that of Matt Lamey but I can get a quality production in less than 2-5 years and im just not sure about the smaller custom makers plus ive heard alot of custom horror stories.
