Ideal Spydie for workouts?

I have been hunting for a less expensive, yet still high performing folder for carry during workouts. I will be doing a good bit of running out in the country and need something to have with me just in case it would be come necessary. I would be hunting for something small, and with good steel in it, probably with very good stain resistance. I will most likely carry IWB to keep it descrete, as it will also be likely carried at the gym and occasionally around campus. I have narrowed it down to the Calypso Jr. Lightweight(VG-10) and Native Lightweight(440V), I like the look of those knives, the size seems right, and I like the way those steels perform. I was hoping I could get some input from y'all as you have much more experience with Spydies than I do, but I'm slowly trying to catch up.

Thanks,
Tique

P.S. I'll also be happy to take input on other models, those are just the ones that most appealed to me while I was surfing around.

I've always used my Delica as a workout knife, but I own a Calypso Jr. Ltwt. and think that it would do a fine job as well.

I debated the Delica and Endura, but both have ATS55, which I am not real fond of. The endura was a bit big too, at least for what I'm looking for.

Well in my honest opinion you can't go wrong with the Calypso Jr lwt. Great knife and great steel. Can easily carry in workout clothes because it is so light. Very dependable knife.

Native, Delica, or Calypso Jr. are all great lightweights. Any one of them would be a good choice.

tique,

Whichever knife, brand or model you decided on, think about looking into a Kydex neck sheath from Mike Sastre at River City Sheaths. My Delica and neck sheath make the rounds with me every night and (for me anyway) carry a lot easier than clipping the knife to a pair of weightless nylon running shorts or stretchy pants. The chain is thick enough to clip a small Mag light onto if you run after dark.

Well, many people know that I'm a huge Native fan, but here I am not so sure it's the best option. Both knives I think would fit the bill well. When I go work out, I usually carry my Dragonfly, just in case it drops and people get too intimidated by a big-looking knife! (By the way, it once did and this guy admired it for a few minutes).

I think that the Calypso Jr. is probably the best pick for this particular goal. Although the Native is lightweight, the Calypso Jr. feels even lighter, and you actually feel like it's not there. If you're wearing gym shorts and do cardiovascular exercises, which of course require a lot of running, jogging, or jumping, then I would pick the Calypso Jr. The Native has a heftier blade and feels much more solid, and I think that I would definitely notice it if I'm doing cardio-exercises. OTOH, if you're just going to lift weights, either would do the job.

Of course, for defensive/tactical purposes, I would pick the Native over the Calypso Jr. any day

Tique, I just noticed that you're planning to do some running and to carry the knife around campus. Your best pick, again, would probably be the Calypso Jr. It is one of Spyderco's most discrete tip-down deep-pocket carries. The Native, OTOH, is tip-up, and looks more "menacing" to the sheeple when clipped to pocket, since the knife and handle tip shows when clipped to pocket. Also, it is not as lightweight as the Calypso Jr. I figure that if you carry it on waistband, weight makes less of a difference, since the knife is much more solidly clipped than in the pocket while you run. But again, it is a less discreet carry.

For cross-country running, I would pick the Calypso Jr. without hesitation over the Native. Also for on-campus carry, since it looks much less "menacing" to campus security and the sheeple "grazing" by

IMHO, both are excellent knives. Get both! Those were my first two, and I certainly don't regret buying them.

All good choices.Just remember if clipped iwb, wash blade off after every workout.I had my Rescue get small rust spots in one sweaty day clipped iwb.Stainless not stainfree.

I think I'll probably go with the Calypso Jr., but keep the comments coming, they are quite helpful. The Calypso will only be carried on campus when I'm jogging or working out. When I'm going to class or whatever, I always have my Viele with me. That is one of my favorite Spydies, but I'd hate to risk losing it while running or if it were laying on the floor of a gym for a little bit.

All good choices.

Also I just got a sales flyer from Smokey Mountain Knifeworks. They have the G-10 rookie and G-10 standard on sale. The Rookies are $39.99 and the part # is SPC51GS

The Standards are $42.99 and the part number is SPC05GS

The phone number for SMKW is 1-800-251-9306

I am not affiliated in any way with SMKW. Just got a sales flyer and thought I would pass the word along. This is a great deal on a couple of excellent knives.

Whatever you decide on I would highly recommend the neck sheath idea. www.bladeart.com has several of Mike Sastre's neck sheaths in stock for various models. I carry a Native in the neck sheath when I am jogging.

I had requested for a neck sheath from Mike Sastre for a Delica model in its locked opened position. Mike took some time to work on it and came thru with flying colors. The advantages of a locked open small folder may not seem obvious as first. But if you are involved in any physical activity and dress minimally, a neck sheath is an excellent choice. A locked open folder will draw and be at the ready (sorry Sal!

)much quicker than one that is in its folding position. It is equal in speed to a fixed blade. If the situation calls for the folder to be clipped away (perhaps in a rush...), simply remove and fold and clipit. This is what I' ve been carrying on a regular basis when biking to work. Once I get to the job, I can remove the Delica and clip it into my work pants. I imagine Mike can make these sheaths for most small/ medium size folders.

Notes: the pocket clip can be removed and carried without any compromise to retention in its sheath. Additionally, it can function as a pocket/ " sheath slip". Most versatile indeed. Thanks Mike for a great product.

My biggest problem with neck carry comes on campus, especially if I was to carry something open or fixed. This isn't as big of a problem if I'm out in the country where I live, but I'm only there in the summer. During fall, winter, and spring, I spend most of my time on campus and do most of my workouts there.

I would second (or third, fourth, whatever) the choice of a Calypso Jr. I usually carry one clipped inside the waistband of my running shorts, just to the right of my spine. It is so light that I'm unaware of its presence. However I'm not sure about the feasibilty of neck carry for running. I tried it with my G10 Harpy and River City sheath and found that it bounced around too much to be comfortable. Has anybody else had this problem or do I just need to smooth out my running style

I think the Calypso Jr. is gonna get the job then.

I am not sure what the deal is with running with a neck knife. My dad usually runs with his stiff KISS and has no problems at all, he just wears a light tank top or whatever over it.
