Ideal Stockman?

I have numerous knives in the stockman pattern, as I am sure most of you do. My buck 301 has been spending alot of time in my pocket lately along with my amber bone case....for some reason my Queen Stockman Honey Amber Stag always sneaks its way back into my pocket, so for me it may be my ideal stockman....what's yours? Whats the one that you keep going back too...

Whats the one that you keep going back too...

That's an easy one; my old Buck 301. Too much history there to change. When I think my edc peanut may be too light, like going on a weekend canoe trip or hike, I find myself reaching for my old 301.

As for the ideal stockman? That's a wee bit harder, and I may be treading on the edge of heresy. I've often mused what would it be like to take a Buck 301, and replace the darn spey blade that I have zero use for, with a combo tool from a Victorinox Bantam. You'd still have all kinds of cutting utility with the clip and sheepsfoot blade, but added capability with can's, bottles, screws, and light duty prying.

Okay, I'm putting on my asbestos long johns.:D

Carl.

For me, it's Mooremaker. This 5301 has been one of my EDC's since it came out in 2003.

 Hmmm....

Interesting idea. Maybe it'll be called a...

Vicstockinox?
Victoriman?
Stockorinox?
Vicstockiman?
Stockoximan?

My brain is starting to hurt...

The first knife I ever bought back in 1977 or so was a Buck 301 Stockman. I carried it for years through highschool. A year or so ago I got back into the traditional knives again and bought another. Then some Cases. I really like the Amber Bone 6318 CV. Then I bought an older Schrade USA Uncle Henry #897 off the "Auction Site" for $16.00. Best $16.00 ever spent. I really fell in love with that knife !! I'm still looking for my perfect pocket carry blade and really enjoying the search....although I have to eat some beans and rice from time to time to fund the search ! I don't think you can go wrong with any of the quality made stockman patterns. That Queen Honey Amber has been haunting my dreams at night........

Of my 6 or 7 stockman pattern traditionals, I always pick the Case Humpback stockman in rough black. It's my daily pocket companion.

The medium Case in CV Amber bone is very close to my ideal stockman. I prefer the pen blade over the spey. I have lowered the blade stop on the sheepsfoot and dyed the scales to be more consistant. To me, the only thing I that would make it better would be a nice thin Turkish Clip for the main blade.

I agree with you, Keith.

For my own taste as far as optimal blade selection and EDC one of these three customs would probably be my first choice:

4" Stockman by Enrique Pena:

In a production stockman I've always been enamored of this sweet Schatt & Morgan:

The Stockman is my absolute favorite pattern. I carried a Case 6375 4 1/4" with CV blades for years and then downsized to a Buck 303. I also have a Case 3318 CV medium stockman the finds itself in my pocket from time to time. Then there's the Buck 301, and Queen makes Great Stockmen as well.

As far as in Ideal stockman and I'm assuming this is for carry here is what I'd want. Start with the Buck 301 frame 3 backsprings and all stainless construction, but completely round the bolsters and keep the good sized choils like Buck uses, but not let any part of any blade stick up out of the handles. Next make the blades full flat ground and brightly polished and use D2 steel as in a Queen, or better yet my personal favorite steel VG-10. Also I'd ditch the spey blade in favor of a pen blade. Finally for the handle material how about a blaze orange G10 or yellow G10 or Micarta with really good texturning. Then for a smaller knife do the same thing using the Buck 303 frame. I think this'd be perfect:)

Nice. The stockman pattern with the zulu spear point? is just about perfect! I don't know why, but to my eye the Pena jigging always just pops. It is nothing I can place by looking, but his jigging just makes me smile!

You have excellent taste my friend. ;)

I still like my Cold Steel large stockman in Carbon V, followed closely by the Queen medium in Amber bone. Great knives!

For production stockmans, I like the Case 6332 (discontinued in 1979, replaced with 63032). Pen blade instead of spey blade, halfstops all around. The 6318 HE (also discontinued) is a close second, or first if you prefer things rounded. I don't do much livestock neutering these days, so I much prefer a pen blade over a spey.
