Hey guys,

I hate to create another 'what knife' thread but here we go... i'll try to provide a bit of input.

I'm looking for a gift for my brother in law. He is not one of us (yet) but in the past I have gifted a leatherman wave and a vic farmer. I was uncertain if he ever used or carried them but this past weekend we were at a bbq and he pulled out the farmer at one point to open a package for my nephews

Now that I know he's using them I feel it's my duty to gift another this year. Money is tight for him/them so I know he doesnt go out a by himself stuff like this and he always seems so thankful and appreicates anything i've ever given him.

So whats the next step for a non-knife-nut? It doesnt have to be a multi but I figured this sub forum would give me the best results as you all appreciate a good multitool and likely have some of the same tastes.

Price range isnt the best but I can go up $150.

I don't think i'll get him a plyer based tool as the wave should have him covered off. Not certain if I should go with another SAK? How do you top a farmer? Fixed blade seem's like a bit much this early on, seem's I should be getting him a nice folder?!

Ideas?

Since he's already got the larger sizes covered quite well, I say get him a smaller SAK, something to wear with dress pants and/or carry on his keychain. Something like a Rambler or Classic or Executive. If you're really intent on spending more than $100, there are any number of fancified Classics you could choose from. But I'd say get him a nice, normal SAK and a bottle of good whiskey. :)

I can image that for someone who is relative new to pocket knives, a fixed blade knife could be a step too far, unless you've introduced him to your own fixed blade knives. I also don't know what kind of guy he is, but I learned that my friends appreciate small and useful EDC items. A (keychain) SAK, flash light, that kind of stuff.

Last year I gave a friend of mine a Fenix E01. His birthday is in november and later he told me that he used that little flash light very often and wondered why he didn't have one already. Unlike us here on these forums, many others often don't think about useful EDC items.

+1 on the Fenix E01 and a small SAK attached to it - preferably one where the blade opens opposite the keyring, for ease of use while still attached to the flashlight. I think he'll be impressed/surprised at how much he uses them both. And, as you said, round it out with a nice folder!

he might like a OHT since its gonna be one hand operable... or a swiss champ.. its gonna impress people with its wide selection of tools... but if its to large, i agree with executive idea... perfect as a keychain... small and elegant...

got to admit... pretty hard to top a farmer...

For that kind of budget, I suggest you get a nice folder. Think BM Torrent, Spyderco Sage, and the like. If you want to stick with multitools but want to give something different, go with Victorinox' 111mm models (with locking blades).

A good pocket size flashlight like a fenix or similar would be better than yet another knife. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. You don't want a reputation as a knife knut who always gives the same kind of present every time, which can turn some people off. I think you have so far baited the hook rather nicely, so let it rest for now and introduce him to yet another useful thing. Maybe synergy will ensue.

YES!

This is something I discovered many years ago when I gave too many knives as gifts. There is too much of a good thing. But the flashlight idea is the best one yet. You've already given him a knife, and apparently he does carry and use it. He's recognized the usefulness of a cutting tool, but he's not going to be a knife knut like us, so gifting yet another sak is not good. Instead, gift him another very useful and important edc item; a nice little personal flashlight. Next to my knife, my little AAA LED gerber is my most used personal edc item. A small flashlight is so easy to get used to carrying. Looking for something under a car seat, dropped item in movie theater, the way to the circut breaker box when the power goes out, all kinds of stuff. Plus, in case it has not been noticed, it does get dark every night. Go with the flashlight.

Vic Super or Deluxe Tinker with a flashlight?
Both are great and needed for the future 'Honey do' lists.

I second the keychain Vic. A Broker with his initials or whatever inscribed is classy for a keychain.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: Absolutely right..

I like the small flashlight idea. Some small lights to consider: iTP A3 EOS, Martac AAA, Eagletac PN20A, Quark mini AA, Fenix E01 or LD01, to name but a few. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! All are great.

After reading through the post I think a little flash light might be the best bet, maybe also a nice pen to go with it if I can stay within budget.

Your right though, with having already gifted the famrer and wave, it's probably way more than enough for someone who isnt one of us.

I'll have to look around and see what I can come up with. He is one of the few people I enjoy sshopping for as I know he's is broke and would never go spend money on stuff like this. Now my mission to to make sure he has all EDC items coverd off!

A nice LED flashlight running AAA battery is very compact (and perfect for EDC) for the amount of light it produces (~80 lumens), it would actually amaze people the first time around. There are many good brands like Fenix, ITP, and the like. You might want to peruse candle power forums for the latest and greatest.

As a complement to the flashlight, get a good compact EDC pen. Inka has a titanium pen with carbon fiber components and Fisher (space pen) ink cartridge. JS Burly has a stainless steel pen by Valiant Concepts that's machined from a solid bar of steel, thus near indestructible.

I think both flashlight and pen can be had for less than $100.
