I'm looking at getting a new knife to replace my Buck 119 for hunting. I would like to use it not only for field dressing and skinning but for processing whitetail as well. I would prefer a knife that holds an edge over one that is tough since I won't be chopping. I'm looking at about $200 or less so custom knives are out of reach, any help would be aprreciated thanks.

Hi Will54 -

I used to think Custom Knives were out of reach as well, but if you're able to splash $200 - there are more than a few Custom Makers who can help you out.

The 1st that comes to mind is Mr. Bryan Breeden (he posts on the "Outdoor Gear, Survival Equipment and More Forum here) - he can make you something for easily less than $200 and his blade sharpness is very well and widely regarded.

I just seen some work from another Custom Maker, though i've no experience with him, his designs look great and he's under $200 as well - linky here:

There are many Custom Makers here and i bet you could have a quality Custom Hunting knife well under your max budget. Or, you can buy a quality 'manufactured' blade which likely may not be as high quality as an individually, Custom made knife (but still excellent).

Just wanted to help you see the options...

Keep an eye out for a Dozier on the exchange. Saw one last week for 200.0
Fallkniven F1 can be had for just north of 100.00
Buck Vanguard 692 is always a lot of knife for the money.
Gene Ingram, Charles May can be had for 200.00 on some exchanges..
Dan Crotts can be found..
David Winston and his son Jason make most of their knives less than 200.00- one of the best custom values IMHO.

Picking the best,is like picking which one of your children you love the most:)

With that price range you can afford a custom from some of the makers here. You can pick out the handle material, grind, and in some cases even design it yourself. Spend some time looking around the makers subforum area.

Here is one I had made for deer hunting- Ky Woodsman made by JK

Looking thru JK's current model lineup, he has a lot of different styles/models in your price range. I don't have a Bryan Breeden knife yet, but definitely plan on it. You might check KFU (Knives For Users) I believe he has a hunter model in your price range too. Keep a look out in the exchange also, some deals there compared to new.

If I'm not using my 119 to process a white-tail, then my choice is my BRKT Wolf River. Nice, thin blade, convex ground, slices for EVER with only a light stropping.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the Cabelas Alaskan Guide and that is at the top of my list as far as production knives because I like the S30V in my Leatherman Charge TTI. I'm also gonna look at Customs though simply because I can get it more taylormade to what I want.

If you want a fixed blade with a traditional clip point blade in premium steel like your 119, I think you're going to have a hard time finding one. I like clip point for hunting, as they make for a great all around field dressing and skinning blade. Off the top of my head, there's the Knives of Alaska Magnum Wolverine in D2. I have one of their other blades in D2 and it holds an edge for a long time and is a decent constructed knife. Not what I would call fantastic fit and finish, but a solid performer. Here's the link if it works: http://www.knivesofalaska.com/item.asp?id=61&r=store.asp?c=2&p=2. Maybe a Fallkniven SK series knife. I have their F2 that I use for caping and field dressing, and their VG-10 stays razor sharp through more than one deer or hog.
