I been thinking of going on my own to the mountains for 2-3 days and see how i would do with the bare min. On the last WSS backpacking trip. Reuben mentioned that he wants to do the same.
So I thought maybe i could set up something with a few other folks from WSS. Here is what the basics i had in mind. Each one carries no more then 5-6lb including the pack. Thats besides the cloths we would wear. Each person can carry only one tool with sharp blade\s. That mean if you bring an Axe you cant carry a knife. You can bring a multitool but nothing else with an edge on it. Each one, cant carry more then 1lb of food what ever it is. Only one way to make fire. Then you can take what ever else you want BUT you cant go above let say 6lb. No one would know what the other person brings with him untill the trail head. We would share what we have and instead of making a camp we would need to cover so much distance in the 2-3 days. So each day would bring diffrent challenges of setting up shelter and getting food togher. It would be intresting to see what everyone would bring as the one blade and which ones would get used the most between everyone. Im looking at maps to find a place where we can do that as we would need to make fire for cooking. It would be the first time so if anyone wants to add more ideas to make it a better trip please do post on here. Oh the only thing that would not have a weight limit are cameras... Im sure you guys would agree on this part.
If anyone has an idea where not far from LA we can do that please let me know.

Oh man, this sounds like an awesome idea Sasha! To bad I didn't live closer to LA or you guys didn't live more north, this would be fun.

theres a contest like this in the RAT forums. 2 nights, 3 days with a knife and an altoids tin full of whatever.

This sounds great. If and when this happens, please post an after-action report.

Good luck with this.

I flew solo and took:

Light sleeping bag
1 liter bottle of water
Stainless steel cup
Ontario Pilots Survival Knife
Firesteel

That's it.

You don't really need food for 3 days. If you do take some, you don't need much.

Erasmus it depands on the how big of a group we get togher. If anyone from here would like to join he would be more then welcom... You cant find a more diverse and great group of people then right here on WSS.
PrimitiveMan that sound fine by me as i carry enough to survive for a few weeks in a pinch lol...

Sasha, this sounds like a fun trip. The problem would be finding a place where we can do things like have a fire and make shelter. I don't know of such a place but I'd go.

Ray, It is amazing that in a state as big as California there is no place to realy get away from it all. I been thinking maybe i should ask some ranger about it.. I rather not break the law if i dont have to....

Sasha

It's a cool idea, for sure. Me and Joezilla are doing something very similar this coming weekend. The differences are, we're doing 1 necker, 1 chopper, and a PSK. And, we're going to a small island. So that's different, too.

I am with you Sasha - my Blog is going to culminate in a week with little to no provisions.

I am interested in this thread too...

EMT Lee and Talfuchre the big problem we have here in CA is that its hard to find place to get away to.. If we get a small group we can try and get things done with out been seen. There are lots of lizards and other food running around that you can get if not seen..
If anyone else wants to join us you are more then welcome. I dont know the time or the place yet but would keep everyone posted..

Sasha

The only caveat I would suggest is to allow each person to bring his PSK but the rule is you can't use it unless it is an emergency. Otherwise, sounds like a great idea.

Instead of looking for something close to LA, you may have to travel a few hours to the Sierras. There are plenty of places you can have a fire in the mountains.

Tons of places in the Mon National Forest here you can do that. I've always considered doing it in Sept because lots of blueberries and cranberries and other edibles at that time.

I would suggest the South Sierra wilderness, or the Golden Trout wilderness which abuts it. You would not be lower than 6,000 feet, and more like 8 to 10K. If you go in the fall, there will be deer, grouse, mountain quail, regular quail, scads of trout, and a few black bears.

Late September is shirtsleeve hot days and hideously cold nights at 6,000 ft., in this region, though. Good axe or batonning country. Bugs are basically gone.

August would be balmy days and mild nights (well above freezing), with most of the smaller trickles and creeks dried up by the heat of summer. The bugs are dying out.

I think there is archery grouse and quail season up there right about now. If you guys have a hunting licence, someone should bring a stick bow and several arrows. You might get a fat grouse. All the grouse I see are above 8 or 9,000 ft.

HD you are lucky in that... CA is the worst state with rules and regulations when it comes to outdoors. If it wasnt so far you bet i would visit you and check out the goats you are always talking about..
Erasmus south eastern sierra seems like the best idea.. I did check out about the area and been told the mosqutos(sp) are out in force for the last two weeks. I can withstand almost anything but they can ran you out of the mountains in no time. The rangers dont like fires out there that high but if stay away from most people and keep it small we should get away with it. When alone its easier, If we keep the group small i dont expect any problems. But it would be nice to find something closer to LA.

Part of the problem is this is the height of fire season. Everything is really dry. There are signs all over Griffith Park forbidding fire of any kind, including smoking. I don't want to have to run for my life!

Great idea, by the way. I'd love to participate but I have an 18 month old to take care of.

Sasha,

My wife and I keep talking about coming out that way for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF and then doing some hiking.

Actually I bought a buck(goat) this spring and had him shipped from Redwood Hills Dairy in Sebastapol via air to Charleston WV:thumbup:
