Im new to collecting knives so, what are some great knives that are essential for any collector to have?

A collection is not what others have or want you to have. It is what you like and want to have. do you ask others if you want salt and pepper on your food?

I dont tell you how to live your life, dont tell me how to live mine. I wanted to see other peoples opinions, alright?

It just depends on what you like to collect; there's no such thing as "essential" knives for a collection. If someone collects Pre-War German knives they don't need a Benchmade. If someone is interested in Benchmade knives and wants a collection of them, they'd in turn have no use for a Swiss Army Knife. If someone collects Swiss Army Knives....

See what I mean?

So what sort of knives are you interested in? A strict and finely-honed "Collection"? A bunch of User knives to suit every imaginable need? Or perhaps an Accumulation containing a wide assortment of knives and bladed items?

Nope, im not into that. Im more into knives that can take abuse.

Do you want them to actually Use, or to Collect? Not the same thing at all, and your answer will determine which knives people recommend.

Hmm. I see you have a point. Its just that ive seen a bunch if other people tell people that, say, a Buck 110 is an essential addition so I was just wondering. Thanks :)

It all depends on whatever story you would want your collection to tell. Any collection that is worth putting together, is assembled around a simple meassage that just about anyone can get from looking at it. Consider "knives used in space" with 4-5 examples and a few photos of the astronauts or missions; or German bayonets of WWI. The possible themes are only limited by your imagination, and whether or not you choose to actually display the set, deciding on theme will help you to choose what you prefer to purchase next.

Ok, ok, I worded this wrong: I like Spyderco and Cold Steel knives. Does that help?

So you want a nice variety of hard-use User knives, including some from Spyderco and Cold Steel. See, you're fine-tuning the collection right now. ;)

Fixed blades or folders?

Well, to people who collect Buck knives, the 110 is probably essential. ;) Head down to the Buck Collectors forum area and you'll find people who only collect Buck 110 knives.

Do you like modern or older knives...classics, rare, or production. I started off with collecting spydercoes and depending on the preformance and longevity of the axis lock on my 705 may add benchmades to my collect. So far i have sage 1, g 10 endura, penknife (which i didnt think i would like but seems very ergonomic), para 2, benchmade 705, and esee 3. Took me a while to find what i like - i have tried a emerson, a griptillian, fallknivens, a zt, a kershaw, coldsteels, and ka-bar so far and found that i love spydercoes for edc and Esee's for outdoor use. Im a bit OCD and will not keep a knife unless i really like it.

Some great companies are the ZT/kershaw lines, Emersons, Benchmades, Spydercoe's, esee's fallknivens, barkrivers are popular, so are case, old schrades, ka-bars, bussekin, chris reeve, hinderers, and more that i cant think of off the top of my head. You could also check out spartan knives, coldsteel, and fehrman knives.

Both

Here are some foundation knives (staples if you will):

Buck: 110
Kershaw: Skyline, Leek, Cryo, Blur
Spyderco: Tenacious, Delica, Endura, Sage Series, Paramilitary 2

These are all on the lower end of price. But popular none the less.
Most of these knives are in every collectors collection. A great place to start learning would be with these knives. Plenty of info on the net. Just google any one of these knives and have at it.

Good luck!

GO to the exchange and just start buying stuff that you like. Let me recommend the custom makers fixed blade section, lots of good deals to be had there.
