I think I've Made a good start here guys, using excerpts from the H.I. site and observations from various threads here at the forum up to page 20 or so in the archives. I also would like to Add that upon completion I wish that the OP be changed from mine to Yangdu's to give her the credit for it, cuz face it guys..she has done so much for us that it would only be right.

I would like input from all of you, to make this sort of a community project and then i and/or a moderator/s will add what is needed or remove what is not and split the thread(hopefully) and make it a sticky. Let me tell you just that lil' ol' bit was quite tiring and i will tell you in advance that i appreciate your input, and critique of this. all input is welcome even if it doesnt end up in the final draft. and be honest.

Do please be nice:D

As a newbie to the world of Khuks, I would like to say THANK YOU for putting that all in one place. I know most of it is available on the HI site, but it's nice to have it here as well.

Nice start, but even if it goes no further, I think it will be a nice quick reference to the various HI models for newbies like myself.

Welcome Billy!
And you are welcome.
If you have more questions, there are plenty of really knowledgable folk here to answer them, all you have to do is ask.

That's a pretty good start. Would it be possible to add a contrast section, or explain why a given khuk is better than another for a given task?

:eek::eek::eek: Yer killin me...lol
Name your tasks, and later today/tonight maybe i'll give it a go. best way to go about this i guess is by question and answer as i'm fairly new at these matters myself. The above was my humble attempt at parroting those folks here who've been gracious enough to share their knowledge and what i've read.

Those of you who already know the answers, please chime in as this is where i could really use the help. I've been awake too many hours with a full day before me.

I was thinking about tasks like clearing brush, chopping firewood, felling trees and saplings, maybe preparing food, digging holes, perhaps butchering game. I mean, I'm tossing a lot of things out there, but even paring it down to what's better for chopping wood/felling trees vs. clearing brush/preparing food. I wonder if it'd be possible to rate each khuk on each task...
Sorry about making you work so hard. Gotta give you credit for assembling all the knowledge you have.

Karda, if that was up a few months ago when I bought my first Khuk, it would have been immensely valuable...and hell, it still is since I'm not done with HI Khuks yet :)

It's great for newbs to find concise information all in one spot, especially when we all face that first "which one" question :)

edit:

Good one wildmike (below); maybe a link on the post to this HI page might be helpful: http://www.himalayan-imports.com/faq/physics/Khukuri_Dynamics.html

In addition maybe a brief note on sharpening to encourage new buyers or point users in the right directions. It could include a link to the HI page on sharpening and any other relevant noteworthy threads. That way people aren't scared off by the initial "how the hell am i going to sharpen a thing like that" :)

My initial decision to purchase my M-43 was due to some information on blade drop comparisons on H.I's site. You may want to include some of that information as others may find it useful as well. That first M-43 literaly saved my ass. I still have it and it is still my favorite blade bar none.

Thank you for the good start, Karda

I remember the blade drop comparisons, I'm just unsure where to find them.
Lack of the search function doesnt help much, if i find them before anyone else, i'll probably include them along with the sharpening links.

The Contrast Comparison is whats gonna get me though, i'm not sure i'm well versed enough to tackle that one.

I've wanted an M-43 since i first saw one, as well as many other blades here, but life and family have to come first. Hard to catch food while youre waving a khuk over your head screaming Ayo Gorkhali!! and i'm getting slower as the years go by. So far the neighbors have only looked at me with puzzled faces as they know they have mostly nothing to fear. Keep your Khuki Friend always near, as i'm sure it feels the same way about you.

Haha, no prob Karda! I wasn't clear in the first post that THAT was the page :)

It takes a little digging through the stickied threads to find the most relevant and direct info on sharpening, I thought maybe a quick note along the lines of "Don't worry, you can sharpen these knives! Basically, the easiest/most accessible way for newbies is X (really brief explanation). Please see these HI pages/ bladeforum threads for detailed info on sharpening: (links)" Might be too much to include though; it might indeed be better in a separate thread (maybe a designated Khukuri Sharpening thread). Just throwing it out there  Let me know if you need help tracking down info Karda; though I'm not as knowledgeable about Khuks as you more experienced users, I don't mind doing a little leg work in my spare time to contribute to the HI forum

I was already rummaging around and found some relevant data.
I in no way want to step on anyones toes, especially those fine people before me who've contributed much. in deference to them i will point out their work. I just haveta figure out a way to properly do it.

The Easiest way to sharpen your khukri, to Hair splitting goodness would be of course to mail it to Mr. Dan Koster( formerly Pendentive) for convexing and sharpening....LOL, but i dont know if he wants all that work and must assume that he gifted his videos for that purpose.

I am becoming aware that this project is larger than i initally thought it would be and i may need time to percolate ideas as i do not want this to be a 1.2 hindquartered effort.

IF Anyone thinks i should word some things differently or better or Add or remove anything, please let me know in this thread.
Any Help anyone wants to give will be Gladly Accepted, carefully considered and credit given.

Things i need to clarify as i'd like to add them:
I know all H.I. Khuks are warrantied to the original owner only for blade and handle if you buy retail. but does this include the DOTD? i know the blade is ,but am unsure of the handle.

@ Yangdu, Ted and Jake

It is Mostly Completed (i think) except for tweaking it, unless more additions are requested. feel free to Modify it at your leasure.
If i've forgotten anything(i know i have) you feel should be there please add it including any accreditations i've forgotten, if anything needs removal or is misinformation you be the judge.

And I'm still trying to figure out the Contrast Comparison thing................:(

:(Ummm. I've pretty much run outta room. I had to reorganize things as i'm pretty darn close to the 15.000 character limit for a single post. I think i only have about 4 characters left. I had to edit this out as i couldnt fit it in darn it. and i so wanted it in there. For now i'm dumpin' it here.

It is said here quite often that these khukri "pick their owners", of that fact you will know when you've made your decision to buy and recieved your khukri in the mail.

I didn't even get to mention the Hanshees or crescent moons or anything.:(

If the Contrast comparison is to be done. i'm gonna have to do this in two posts.
Please if you would split this topic or something, so as to give me more work space.

or tell me good enough.:D

Looks very good Karda  Thorough without being overwhelming :)

Thank you, very much, but are you sure i didnt miss something.....lol

i just hope its not to hard to understand for new peeps, ya know.

I just wanted it to look good and professional.

I can read it through tonight more closely, but i think it'd be better to get input from the more knowledgeable folks about specifics. From a newbie point of view, it looks great, i don't think you missed anything. I'll read it over again tonight though :)

Ya know, one could almost dedicate a small wiki site to the various HI blades, khuks and otherwise. This kinda thread would make for a great wiki page, replete with pics. Alas, I don't know how to set a wiki up. :-/
