Ideas for first SAK?

My usual multitool is a Leatherman ps4 squirt, but at times I feel like its going to break during easy tasks,so I need to pick up something a little beefier. I was looking at the Leatherman juice, but for the price I found I could get a really nice victorinox. I've never owned or held any type of victorinox SAK,but they seem to have a good reputation. What I need most is a Phillips and flat head screwdriver, scissors, and awl. I was looking at the explorer plus,as it also comes with a magnifying glass and screwdriver bit, which would be nice for me as I wear glasses. Any suggestions?

Yep, Explorer seems to be a nice choice. For a lightly bigger (beefier?) package, you have the Outrider that seems to have everything you need, plus a locking blade. For quick glasses fix, make sure you get the tiny flat head screwdriver that goes in the corkscrew.

Super Tinker

Tinker, every thing you need and nothing you don't. Plus, it is light and thin for every day carry.

Great first SAK.

I agree that the Tinker and Super Tinker are groovy. I just bought a used Super Tinker. But if you can handle one additional layers (4 total), the Explorer Plus give you a phillips that folds out parallel to the scales like God intended. This is much more useful IMO than a back-mounted phillips that is often just not that easy to use. JMO. The 4 layers is thicker, and thats a deal breaker for many folks. But you also get something in return. Just something to consider.

From the Classic on up, they all have their place. But for me the Explorer Plus is where its at. The "Plus" feature adds a straight pin and ink pen.

I like the magnifying glass on the explorer, more for the fact it makes it look more gizmo like than its potential usefulness. I'm really surprised at the prices they go for, I usually only buy the "tactical" type knives and they cost a pretty penny, but a pretty well equipped SAK can be had for under $40.00.

Has anyone ever used a Swiss Champ? I see one for the same price as the explorer, has way more tools but I'm not sure how comfortable it would be at it's giant size.

I've had the victorinox fieldmaster for nearly 20 years--I have used it constantly.

I carried one for years as an EMT, you actually get used to it and don't notice it anymore than other knives. Plus you can get a belt sheath for them if pocket carry seems to heavy.

I second the Explorer/Explorer Plus. It's not too big, yet has everything you need.
I also carry a Spartan because it's very EDCable and handy as all hell.
For the price, you can't go wrong with a SAK.
