Ideas for personal kits...

Forget matches, I put in a "IRODA" jet lighter and lint wrapped in saran wrap from the dryer lintcatcher as a kindling additive.

Bearbait,

First, thanks for sharing your info!

Second, "Lint"...I've heard about using that once before. Works pretty good then? IRODA jet lighter? Where can I find out more about this?

Thanks again.

Yes, lint works well catching fire with sparks from a ferrocium rod. Someone posted that cotton lint works much better than lint from man-made fabrics. Check out the "Playing with fire" thread over on the Swamp Rat forum for a bunch of info on firestarting and tinders:

(edited to add) Another thread with some firestarting info is http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=181735 IMHO the egg-carton firestarters discussed in this thread would probably be a bulky fit in a BK sheath pouch. I think you could fit some vasaline or wax soaked cotton balls packed into a 35mm film can pretty easily in the Becker sheaths, along with a small sharpener, ferrocium rod, Potable Aqua iodine tabs, and some vitamin C tabs to counteract the iodine taste in the water.

As small update to my "playing with fire" thread:

I now also carry a tube of bike patch repair glue ("vulcanizing fluid"), and bands cut from bicycle inner tubes. The glue lights very easily (within three strikes on the ferro rod), and a gram sized glob burns with a decent sized medium-hot yellow flame for twenty seconds or so. The bike innner tube lights from the burning glue quite easily, and burns well. (It stinks, though.) It's waterproof, durable, and can serve other (rubberband-like) purposes.

Thanks to Sargey for the tip about the bike patch kit.

As for general ideas for a personal kit, take a look at this:

On another survival site I saw a contest using the knive using the sheaths and the interior of the handles for storing survival items.
There were some very well thought out kits in the mix. Could be more fun than seeing what you can fit in the altoids can.

Sorry; took so long to get back here again, lint and my dads bic lighter was a ( painful and embarasing expierience) to say the least.
I liked the follow up thread on the glue additive; ( the things I forget as I grow old). Iroda lighters are basicly pipe lighters and can be purchased from any tobacco shop or maybe from Radioshack in their mini butane torch combos.

I wish you the best on pursuing S.E.R.E / S.A.R. training and remember: " The only easy day was yesterday"
