Ideas for Pipe Dreams:Market Competition

I know everyone is hyped up on the new BM 42, not to mention the run of old stuff. I myself placed an order a few days ago (yes, i'm at the end of a long, long line). Al the same, i thought maybe it would be wonderful if other companies, particularly those already committed to quality knives at reasonable prices made a bali-line. Since there is all the import hoopla, i suppose it would be best (at least for me, as a resident) if the company was US based. In your pipe dreams, who do you think would make a good knife. Who knows, with enough suggestions, i may get off my keister and try to organize a futile letter writting campaign. I'm not sure who would be good, but CRKT seems tro make good stuff (though i'm not sure their stuff is still US made), as do many others. So, any ideas?

Well, I just got my first Microtech auto...and it is amazing quality...probably the sharpest knife i own too...i bet they'd make a great balisong.

A microtech Balisong.. what a novel idea.. Idunno how their obsessive fan base will react though (but I am slowly getting interested in those cute knives

) It'll be hard to go up against BM though. Now that I think of it CRKT might just be the ticket, although they'd be sending their designs to their malaysian slaves so that woudln't be USA made, then again you know they'd have a good price (at the cost of steel or whatnot though) - I just gotta commend them on putting out the KFF, sadly the materials kind of suck.

Sorry to let you down, but CRKT imports 100% of their product line from asian sources. Gerber imports most of their line as does Kershaw. Spyderco imports a large portion of their line. Al Mar is 100% imported.
Leatherman and Benchmade are both Made In U.S.A., but that's getting very unique.

Microtech would be a good hope, wouldn't it. My advice: wait for it.

Balisongs -- because it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

There are probably more than a few companies waiting for the official release of BM's model 42 to see how sales go.

The knife world is no different than any other sales based business. If the 42's sell big numbers, I'm sure we'll see a few other companies looking to cash in on that success.

The fact that BM holds the over $100 market, also makes the under $100 market wide open. And since BM doesn't seem interested in targeting this price range, we could see some fierce competition. At least I hope!

To be honest, I'd like to see Spyderco take a "stab" at it. I think they could pull off a good $60-$70 dollar model.

getting 'em open

I also would like to see Spyderco bang one out. Clay's right, that $50 to $80 market range is just sitting there, soft underbelly exposed, waiting to be cut wide open and exploited for sales numbers that would make NASA look...........

Whoa there, but I digress. Yep. Like to see a Spydie.

Yeah, a while back someone asked Sal if Spyderco would ever make balisongs. Unfortunately, Sal never answered the question.

But I would also love to see Spyderco balisong.

A real knife collector is always broke.

The funny thing about Sal Glesser (from Spyderco) is that he is supposed to have a pretty big collection of Balisongs.

The problem is, he and Les De Asis are friends, and I doubt he'd want to tread on his friends space.

Two words: Himalayan Imports. Oh yeah. Just think of it, the balikhuk. 18" OAL, 3/8" thick, about 1 1/2- 2 1/4 lbs. A true beast. Heh, heh, heh.

Clay, I don't think the competition thing between Spyderco and Benchmade would present any problem. Look at the products they put out now. Each has a good line in a broad range of prices and a following to match. I don't think there's any violation-of-space thing there.

If Spyderco put out a Bali in the $75 range, they would probably sell just as many to Spydie collectors as to actual Bali users. If Sal has a good collection of swing-things then he sure ought to know how to build a good one. IMHO, of course.
