Hello everyone!

I have been looking for a knife to fit these specifications:

-A2 or 01 or similar blade steel
-full tang
-6 to 8 inch blade ( prefer 7 )
-convex ground
-big handle for big hands
-no recurves - no tanto
-does not have to be pretty
-high quality fit and finish where it counts

Price: 0-400$

I say untility/fighting meaning to me, a tough knife that is balanced well and would be useful in both situations.

Thanks to anyone that has input!

Kevin

Stag,
What are you going to fight .... humans .... grizzlies .... mountain lions ... rabbits ... makes a diff in the equipment .....

Can you say Ka-Bar? But I imagine that you've thought of that already. They make a USMC version in D2 which I think is similar to the steels you've mentioned. Ka-Bar calls the USMC a "fighting/utility" knife, and its been trusted by our men at arms for years and years. I doubt you can go wrong with a Ka-Bar. The only criteria I'm really unsure about is the hollow grind, but you can check it out none the less.

Convex grind requirement may rule out a lot of knives but Justin at Ranger Knives I believe makes convex grind and in general makes extremely good knives for for the kind of use you are looking for.

Check out the Bark River Socom 7 fighter. Convex grind, good balance, and an excellent fit and finish... Sorry, but they're pretty too. :D (SOCOM 7 Fighter pictured below with stag & turquoise spacer but they come in many different handle materials)

Sounds pretty much like you are describing a Busse.

The Fusion Steel Hearts in particular. The handles on these are about 1/2" longer than previous models and should fit the largest hands.

Have a look around over at the Busse sub forum.

I have one of them also. Not convex or full tang. Thanks. The handle does fit my hand well though.

I have a bark river teddy similar to the socom 7. This is the knife that I currently use for this purpose.

I really want to have the full tang. Waiste of time or not, it will give me a feeling of added security.

Thanks

I have really been wanting to get a Busse. I have trouble finding specs on the knives though.

I guess I will try the Busse sub forum as you advise.

Thanks

Take a look at the site http://www.bussecollector.com/. It has the specs of most all Busses gathered in one place. Your real problem is going to be availability, unless you want one of the more recent knives.

Thanks! I am in no rush finding the knife once I decide on one. The longer I think about it the better.

I think I have decided on the Fusion Steel heart. Just want to know the type of grind now.

Scott Gossman (at least almost) always does convex grinds and full tangs. His work is well-respected around here, and I fairly certain you can get what you're after from him for well under $400.

Find him in Knifemakers' For Sale: Fixed Blades or Shop Talk.

Good luck

Thanks! I will look into his work. I also like the looks of Phillip Patton knives. I have not seen any over 6 inch yet though.

This subject comes around about every two months or so. The recommendations are all similar. But so are the questions. Just what/who are you planning to fight?

I've checked ESPN, looking for "The world grand champion knife fighting marathon," can't find anything like that. Maybe an "Any which way you can" scenario, sans Clyde. Very clandestine and in some old warehouse. If you can find these fights, how much would one expect to make on the professional knife fighting circuit? Do you go to school to learn this, or is it something you pick up on your own. Who do you practice on/with?

Just an "Old fart" trying to increase his education.:)

I am not planning to fight anything and prefer not to encounter a situation needing to.

But IF........;)
