I am tossing up between a Sage and Native 4 but I cannot make my mind up. I like the Native over the Sage but I like the price of the Sage better.

What are your thoughts between the two? Does anyone have any other suggestions for a CF folder with handle around 4 inches?

Regards

The Native IV and looks in person, to me, like a much more expensive, well-built folder.

It's solid all around, close-backed, while the Sage is open-backed and lighter in weight.

The Sage has a larger handle, where the Native IV is thinner with a shorter handle.

Either way, they're both very nice knives.

Yes indeed! The ZDP-189 CF Caly3. which is not only possibly the best EDC Spyderco makes, but has a fit and finish second to none.

I would also suggest choosing between the Sage and the CF Caly 3. I've had and used several CF Caly 3s and every one of them has been 100% in F&F and performance. I EDC a G10 Caly 3 now (having passed over several Striders and Sebs to carry the Caly 3).

The Sage is a great knife... got one of those as well. I like the Sage's textured CF more than the ZDP Caly 3's smooth CF, but the Caly 3 carries better in pocket and both cut equally well. I also like the Sage's open construction, but the F&F on the Caly 3s is entirely sufficient to allow easy cleaning of the lock well and the inside of the knife. An advantage to the Caly 3s that I came to appreciate only after use is that they are washerless. This allows tolerances that are tight enough to keep almost all gunk from getting into the pivot area. I d/a a Caly 3 after about a year of pocket carry and use and there was nothing in the pivot except a little bit of lube.

The Stretch II is one of the best all around designs in the Spyderco quiver. A little bigger and more expensive.

Between the two mentioned the Sage is a damned good knife for a good amount under $100.

I have two (one is unsealed though) and the one I carry is super smooth, locks up strong, carries deep and just works really well.

Spyderco Stretch II CF is my personal favorite, high quality, but more expensive than Sage and Native models, but to me, its well worth the price.

Probably, choice is matter of personal preferences. I choose Native4. Great ergos, looks great, outstanding fit and finish, love it. I carry it after work and on weekends for about six month.
I have Sage and CF Caly3, but they never made to EDCs. I do not like Sage's blade or Caly3 laminated line (but I love VG10/G10 Caly3 and EDC it at work every day for more than two years).

What was it about the Sage's blade you did not like?

How does the Sage v's Native feel in the pocket?

Cheers,

Cheers,

A while ago on Spyderco Forum, Sal mentioned that blade on the Sage is something between Caly3 and Native. I love Caly3 (big hump)and love my Native4 (no hump), but kind of do not care about Sage.
Sage a little thicker than Native4, but I do not feel any difference in the pocket. On other hand, I carry C83 Persian all day long, seven days a week, which is much bigger, and wight/size doesn't bother me at all.
Any of these three are great knives.

But the real purpose is a bit deeper. The design itself is a synthesis between the Native design (3" mid lock-back with no "hump") and a Caly3 (3" mid lock-back with a large "hump"). "Sometimes you feel like a hump, sometimes you don't" and sometimes you're not sure :p

Good luck.

Might I suggest something totally different?

Beretta Avenger2 Warren Thomas design.

It's a great knife to EDC. The screws look like they might snag but they are very pocket friendly. The blade is VG10 and the lock is very authoritative with it's "tink!" Tip up carry. I had one I got from the bay for $88 but gave it to a friend.

In that size range I would go Caly 3 CF ZDP for the better blade steel and excellent ergos. Another step up is the Stretch 2 and the Superhawk. Those are 2 great knives, both worth every cent I paid for them. My father in law loves my Superhawk so much that I bought him one for father's day and he couldn't be happier. The Stretch 2 I rand as second all time to the Superhawk in ergos, and. Just love it's slicing machine ZDP blade in just about a perfect sized EDC. If I didn't love the hawkbill and comp lock on the Superhawk the Stretch 2 would easily be my favorite CF knife ever, but I rank it side by side with the Superhawk because they are both so great for different reasons. If you want a sheeple friendly scalpal the Caly 3 CF is the way to go, and I do love mine, but the Superhawk and Stretch 2 are just perfect EDC knives with their 3.5" blades.
