Ideas on Re-Handling Vietnam-Type Tomahawk?

While we're discussing Vietnam-type 'hawks, anyone out there have any ideas about a good way to re-handle one of the wooden-handle variety? Preferably with something (other than thin wood) that won't break or come out as easily?

If I am understanding you correctly, it appears that if you were to take the handle out of the hawk-head, you would drastically make the hawk less sturdy. In which case, I personally, would NOT do. Save up the money and buy a VTAC from ATC. Some people on board here dont like the handle on the vtac due to the fact that they perceive it to be slippery from time to time, when the hands are sweaty or wet, etc.. I still advocate this to be a better avenue than re-handling a hawk. You can always get some sort of sticky handle wrap to put around the vtac's handle, making the grip better while still having an extremely sturdy handle. Hope this helps.

Go down to Lowe's or HomeDepot and by a framing hammer handle. Trim to fit, sand and stain if desired. Install it like a regular hammer handle, then soak in boiled linseed oil for a week. I redid one about a year ago. I haven't done much throwing with it sense but it seems to be very solid.

if it is a vietnam hawk from atc i'd contact andy prisco. he has a reputation of taking care of his customers. if it is from another source i'd try another hawk maker to try and fix it. these kind of hawks have wedges instead of a normal handle design which makes things more difficult
