After reading about and seeing folks' custom 110's from PCKS, I went there and played around with the options. I guess my tastes are simple, because I wasn't interested in a lot of the handle materials. I also don't care for finger grooves or serrated blades. But I did come up with 2 ideas, and wanted to see what people thought of them.

1) BG42; heritage walnut; brass bolsters; rivets; no FG; no serrations. This one is very similar to the stock 110 that I have. Because this would cost $84 and I can get a stock 110 with 420HC from OSH any day of the week for $35, in effect the BG42 blade would cost me $49. I have to decide if it's worth it.

2) BG42; smooth Asian water buffalo; nickel bolsters; no rivets; no FG; no serrations. I think that this one is just very simple and classy looking, all black and silver.

What do you folks think?

Your #2 is also my favorite.
Although I also considered the same combo with the jigged water buffalo horn.

Aeneas, You are expressing your vision of the "perfect knife"
as YOU see it. As such that is all that matters. Either knife or
both would be what you should buy. For what they cost buy
both.

As to the extra cost of the Bg-42 blade.....
If you USE a knife a lot or want a great edge
holding steel, buy it. If you just want a show
piece save your money.

What you will have is a knife made just for you.
EVERY knifenut wants that sooner or later.

ENJOY!!

About a year ago I ordered up a 110 from Pete's in BG-42, FG, Stag. It's great, but just too darn purdy for the heavy use I keep a 110 around for. I recently sent my standard 110 in for a replacement blade in BG-42. Now I have that great blade in a knife I can strap on when I head for the hills! Cost was just $30.

I didn't know that you can send them in for replacement blades. Where on the web site, or elsewhere, do I find out how to do that?

Your best bet is to email Joe Houser. I don't have the addy handy, but a search of this forum should find it.

Aeneas – You have the right is idea. Go for the BG-42 blade. Buck’s BG-42 is absolutely sensational for outdoor work. It holds an edge, has good wear resistance, and is easy to sharpen back up. And most important to me, it tends to roll instead of chip. Edges are easy to roll back straight, but chips are a bitch when you’re out in the field. As for this very moment, BG-42 is my favorite outdoor use stainless steel. It’s like 440C on steroids.

The rest is just a matter of personal taste. Grab the handle material that looks and feels best to you. If you want impact resistance, go with wood. If you want waterproofing, do a bone of some sort.

Didn’t PCKS once have a Micarta handle option at one time? I’d really dig a Micarta handled 110. That would make the 110 darned near indestructible.
