Ident. Gerber steel

My two Gerbers I have are the L.S.T. (Lrg), and the XDP drop point hunter. They look to be of the same steel, with a grey-ish coating. They seem to sharpen up Ok and hold a good edge; just wondering if anyone knows about the steel.

Was there a switch when they started laser etching them instead of stamping them?
