Hi All,

First time here.

Wondering if any might be able to help with further info than what I can find thus far. Sorry, but I know nothing about knives, so hoping for a bit of help. Got this at an estate sale because looked pretty rustic/old, cool and usable. If value is based partly on condition which I'm sure it is, this is likely worth little, however, thought it'd be fun to get more info. on age, etc.

Imprinted is an Oak Leaf with words "Oak Leaf" inside. I was able to find enough info online to find out that this was made by Simmons Hardware Co. which helped me to identify some of the letters that have worn off. Wondering if the metal handle was something that the knife owner fashioned himself after the original came off?? or if, perhaps, this could be original? Looks as if it has had quite a bit of use.

Can't make out any other wording due to them wearing off.

Have got to figure out how to best clean and sharpen also. Any advice would be awesome! Thanks all.

You are welcome to tap into the experience here to find out about the origins, age, steel etc.

Check out the stickies, and please take some time and look around.

Edit - I found this about William Enders "Oak Leaf" brand -
"William Enders was an interesting character. He started in the hardware business with Simmons Hardware Co. Simmons is best known for their trade mark "Keen Kutter". Enders quickly moved up within Simmons reaching position of VP. He was talented at developing new products and improving on old ones. He started a product line trade name "Oak Leaf". This product line began as "Simmons Oak Leaf". Later Enders began marketing the brand as Enders Oak Leaf. Enders left Simmons and began manufacturing items under the Enders brand name, razors, knives, tools, etc. This brand is still in production, mainly punches and chisels. The guns marked enders were produced during his association with Simmons Hardware. He was the only person I am aware of who had his own brands while still associated with Simmons."

Sure - just edit out the part about value and rock on!!

A little googling turns up some good info about the fellow who marketed those cleavers (and other tools) - he also put that logo on some guns!
