Hello Gents,

I just acquired this Case stainless mini trapper, dated from 1998. Its had a interesting and hard life no doubt, it was abused greatly by someone. Gaps, and tweaked bolsters, an apparently broken and re-ground blade, pock marks in the blade like someone used it as a welding ground... Its seen better days for sure. I'll either re-fit it as a sheepsfoot main two blade jack, or take it down to a single blade, I'm undecided..

But anyway, my reason for the thread, is, what do you think the bone color was soposed to be, or was called? It looks to me to be their pocket worn jig...

Doesn't really matter for my purposes, which will be to make a nice user of it. I just can't help but be curious, since its such a mottled, somewhat dull coloring. :)

That looks like red appaloosa bone - they had a few variations of the appaloosa bone back then -

I have to add - the unfortunate tanto grind on that blade looks like a modernized, edgy kabar dog head....if you squint just right...

Thanks!

Looking at it as I got it, and in my initial pics above, I'd agree, it really does remind me of the red appaloosa knives I always wanted(although I can't say I've ever seen jigged apaloosa bone, or find a jigged one on the net to compare it to)

But the scales are getting darker the more I handle it, probably as it takes in oils from my hands,.. If you get it wet they get great color and sheen, but dry they are verry matte. Something has dried the bone out too much i think, or taken the glaze/shine off them.

little darker now from handling it;
