Hello,

Can anyone help me identify this knife? The scales are a green jigged bone and the "XX Limited Edition 1 of 2500."

I think it is a melon tester, but all the melon testers I have found have a rounded butt and this one has a squared butt.
Anyone know what this one is worth?

Thank you.

It's not a melon tester. It's a doctors knife. Many doctors knives have 2 blades, the second blade being a spatula of sorts (no sharp edges) used for separating/counting pills. Sometimes they're refereed to as physicians knives. I understand why the 2 blade version with the pill spatula is known as a doctors knife, but I don't know why the single blade version is, other than it shares the same handles.

As for its value, we can't discuss this as per forum rules unless you have a Gold membership or higher (the assumption is if you're asking for value, you may be intending to sell, and only Gold or higher members are allowed to sell). Details here.

That said, now that you know what it is, it should be easy enough to for you to figure out its value. On the blade tang, on the side opposite the shield side (called the pile side) there should be a 4 digit number (being the pattern number) with SS after it (meaning stainless steel). I'm guessing 61855S. Plug that into google or that big ol' auction site and you'll find links for new ones for sale. On the blade tang on the shield side there will be a number of Xs and dots with the Case logo. Use this guide to find the year your knife was made. That should give you enough info to find your exact knife.

Sorry about that Maskedman! I edited your original post to add your value question.

Please folks, remember to update your user group, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/profile.php?do=editusergroups, if you upgrade your membership. The majority of us behind the curtain can't tell that you've upgraded unless you update.

Doctors knives originated when physicians compounded their own medicines. That's why most have spatula blades. The butt is designed to serve as a pestle.

The tang stamp on that, if I am (barely) making it out correctly, looks fairly recent. The 'Tested XX Series' etch on the blade also indicates it's a more modern vintage. Those are built with essentially the same materials as Case's standard-line knives, but with additional embellishments like the unique shield, special tang stamps, blade etch, and sometimes grooved/pinched bolsters. I'm assuming post-2000 on this one.

A closeup of the tang stamp would help in determining the exact year of production.
