Identify Spyderco Positron Scales

Hi,

I had this Spyderco Positron for a while, but I was never able to identify the scale material. I am assuming it is either a sprint run or a well made modification. The box says “Orange PLN,” but it looks like wood or Micarta.

I attached several photos of the knife and a stock photo of the Positron Orange PLN for comparison.

Any thought?

Thanks,

It's just orange G10. The PLN refers to the edge, it's a plain edge knife.

Orange G10 was a Knife Center exclusive.

Looks like g10 to me, maybe it's just a slightly different color batch. Send it to me and I can tell you for sure ;)

I removed the scales and they are not G10. See this photo. The knife is on its way to you anyway

I can't tell what's different about the second picture. It really does look like darkened G10. What makes you think it's not G10?

I’ve seen an orange Positron in G10. Besides that it is a bright plain orange color, the texture feels different. If it were G10, it must be something that I have never seen before. Out of all the G10 knives I have (Spyderco or other brands), I don’t have anything that feels even close to this particular one. In any case, G10 or not, it’s a great knife.

What does it taste like? Do you have some other g10 you can compare it against?

Are you the original owner of the knife? The scales look like G10 that got wet with something that muted the color and accentuated the layers. Oil and grease will do that.

I think that’s what you have, a standard orange KC Positron, but exposed to something that darkened the material.

Where'd you get it? Maybe the previous owner tried to dye the orange G10 and it didn't work as expected.

This was my thought. Whether it was the anticipated outcome or not, only that person could say.
Dimashkieh Dimashkieh The positron DOES feel different from a lot of other Spyderco g10 - it's a smoother finish. As for the reference to other makers, it would depend on the specific knife; but smooth g10 isn't unusual.

I am not the original owner. I got it a good while ago from someone who sold it to me as orange G10, and when I asked him why it looks like that, he didn’t have an answer. I honestly like it like that better. Lately I was showing it up to someone who reiterated that it looks unusual, so I thought I will seek your expertise.

Agreed. I am trying to capture the grain wood-like material under the smooth finish, but the system is not allowing me to upload hi-res large photos. Here’s one more photo anyway. E0A1632E-8247-4021-9489-29D5EFC4FC35.jpeg

Pretty sure G10 has that - it's just generally not as obvious as micarta. It's just the way the layers show up due to the shaping.
It looks like a dye job was done, with minimal penetration on the "face", more on the sides. That could have been intentional, or related to the particular product used.

Take a look at this image - the texture looks very similar, with the only difference being the shade of orange.
