this was a gift from my FIL last year. he is an electrician and found this under an old farm house they were re-wiring for the new owners. they told him to keep it and he passed it on to me. it was solid rust when i received it and the handle was hanging by a thread. i cleaned it up as best i could and fixed the handle gave it a good coat of oil and stuck it in the corner. found it again today and just wondered if anyone could give me some info on this thing. what type of tool is it really? there is what i assume is a maker's mark as well. these are the best picks i could get with my dinky camera. thanks in advance for any info.

That's a "hewing hatchet/axe" or a "side hatchet/axe." Used for wood working so that you can attain a flat surface because the chisel grind and offset of the bit allow you to work at an extremely shallow angle to the wood.

Cool old piece!

could be an old blacksmith made hatchet and the mark that looks like a "DC" could be the Smith's mark, maybe, maybe not. Are those a couple of small crack in the third picture in line with the eye of the hatchet?

yeah, those are little hairline cracks. this thing has not been babied. it has been used and abused for who knows how long. i am thinking of just making a wall hanger out of it. it is a cool looking chopper.
