what's the story on the one in the middle?

I don't recall having seen it before nor do I recall where I got the photo.

I'm color blind - is that tan or double-cut? I'm betting it's something the owner did and not a production combo.

It looks like a Desert Anorexic Badger Attack with some work done on the swedge....but wouldn't bet my life on it :)

Nevermind...I was looking at the second one down.

Middle. Miiiiidddduuullll. LOL (3rd one down. . . or 3rd one up. FWIW, I counted wrong the first time too. LOL)

It looks like a slotted bolt, sterile, doublecut SHBA. Probably A2? I've never seen one like that before. That's a pretty nice hunk of steel, if you can find it.

The third one down is a SHBA that appears to be bead blasted (Busse didn't do the double cut process back then), small holes and slotted screws, so it is most likely A2.

Yes that is a factory bead blasted SHBA. It may or may not be A2. Several old time Busse collectors have said that they recall it being said that this SHBA and the other one I know of like it were some of the very first INFI knives.

It is one of those that if I ever sold I'd sell it back to the guy I got it from or if he didn't want it maybe it would go to Alaska...

I can't think of anyone else that would want it :confused::confused:

I remember some thing about a Factory shortened handle, I just do not remember what.

Some thing about clearance to bolt some thing on, or some such.

It is a Good looking knife, there is usually a reason for all/each different from the norm handle slabs.

Those old SHBA's are waaaaaaay over rated. ;)
You better send that one to me for proper disposal. :D

It`s a SHBA, 2nd gen (1st had a shorter handle) But it`s certainly NOT A-2.

We didn`t leave the slots on the screws until we switched to INFI. Even if you bead blast it and spray it immedialtly with oil A-2 rusts if you look at it with a tear in your eye.

Thanks for the info:thumbup:

I had thought that smooth bolts were A2, slots maybe INFI but 85% A2, and tubes 100% INFI unless the knife had been reworked. And of course all SHBMs would be INFI with a few guys placing an "*" on some early ones.

I haven`t been back to the shop since I got married 3 years ago, but I worked 7 1/2 fabulous years for Jerry. I was there when we switched from A-2 to INFI. Because A-2 is prone to rust it was easy to tell the unmade blanks apart from the INFI. But to make sure we didn`t mix up the knives, slotted bolts were only used on INFI. By the time they switched to tube fasteners we hadn`t bought any A-2 for a couple years and were only using INFI for everything but apprentice blades.
A quick way to tell is to look at the spine between the handle slabs. We usually cold-blued the A-2 to prevent rusting. If it`s a dark gun metal blue, you`ve got A-2. INFI was never meant to be stainless....but for some reason after the heat treat and tempering process it`s VERY rust resistant and won`t really take the bluing.
