Can anyone help me with identifying this custom Buck 124. I was told its a 124. I'd like to know about how old it is.

Your first post, welcome to the Buck forum. Yes, it is a 124 Frontiersman. My initial opinion is that it came out of the original Buck Custom shop which was in operation from about 1982 to 1992. The Old English font custom tang stamp and the way it is serial numbered reinforces that opinion. What is the handle made of?

I agree with DeSotoSky on everything and would guess the handle as Desert Ironwood.

Yes it does look like the Ironwood. I thought it was rosewood, but after you said the desert ironwood, I compared the two and it looks like the ironwood.

That's an interesting 124. Can't recall ever seeing one with brass hardware. Also looks like it doesn't have the full/exposed tang of the standard 124.

Disregard, just the angle of the photo. New photo below shows the full tang.

Here is another angle. Also, should I just store this knife in the shape it is, or should I clean it up?

The bad thing is, if it walked out of Buck factory they might keep it...
If it's a lunch pail knife... But it does have a serial numbered...
So that's a good thing... You might want e-mail Joe Houser about it
first and send him a few pic's... and them if all is good you can send it
to BKI in care of Joe Houser and he'll take care of it... :)

I might just do that. I need to find a good sheath for it. Unfortunately I do not have the original sheath. My neighbor came up to me the other day and was like " Hey, you like knives, you can have this one". I tried to talk him out of it and told him it wasn't a cheap knife. He just didn't want it anymore. I'll do some research about the sheath, unless you guys have some input...

I'm in the minority here. Absolutely no reason to send that knife back to Buck, there is nothing wrong with it. Give it a good polish with Mothers mag wheel polish and it'll shine like new. About the sheath, I assume it'll be a display knife, certainly that knife ain't going camping. Sliding a knife in and out of a sheath does cause rub wear on the mirror polish and acids in the leather accelerate tarnishment of the brass. You don't need a sheath if you aren't carrying it on your belt and a sheath is the worst thing to store it in. Find a nice display box and fondle it frequently. I try to not store my knives in the sheaths.
