Hello, I've got this photo of a painting (18th or early 19th century made).
can you identify that basket hilted sword? I'm not an expert. and sorry for the bad quality of the pic...

Thanks!

From the clothing, you could be looking at as early as late 16th Century. Closely spaced buttons, a cape instead of waistcoat. It's a rapier. The rapier belt looks Italian but cannot be certain. Here's a portrait of a Milanese Gentleman from the late 1600's. Notice the button spacing and cape. The collar is a bit more ornate but by the beginning of the 1700's frills were going out of fashion.

Bear in mind that although fashion in Europe took longer to migrate, it did migrate, so fashions in France (mostly Paris) and Italy (mostly Milan but also Florence ) were soon adapted by other countries as the haute' de couture of the period. We're speaking of the upper classes, of course, which were at the time the only ones who could afford portraiture (not to mention nice clothes). Most everyone else wore homespun, serviceable work clothes with perhaps one handed down, carefully maintained outfit of a bit better quality for ceremonies and church.

EDIT: If that painting is in sunlight, or much light, period, get it into a darker area, away from smoke, immediately.
