I have heard many times that if a knife was made in a foreign country, it is required to indicate so on the tang stamp. I came across a vendor who claimed that since a certain knife didn't say "China" or "Pakistan" or "Taiwan" or "Swaziland", it was made in the good, old USA. The commercially produced knife in question didn't have any country identified - just the maker and the model number. I threw the BS flag but if some of you much more knowledgable folks care to weigh in. . .

There are many ways to skirt the laws regarding (identifying) the country of origin or manufacture by those inclined to do so. There is a recent thread on this topic.

Bottom line is that there is a certain amount of faith involved...so buy from makers and vendors you trust. Better chance of not being hoodwinked.
