I bought three old stones out of a barn for $1. One large stone looks like sandstone and is about the size of a common brick, but somewhat longer. It is the classic yellow brown color and is dished on one side. The others are two-layer stones, 1-1/2"x3-12 and 2x6".
One of the smaller stones is so impregnated with oil that I cannot tell the grit. I plan to put it in a pan of soapy water in a 200 degree oven for a few hours.
Question: can I just estimate the grit number by comparing to my other stones (I've got a bunch from 400 to 4000 or so.
What is sandstone's best use?
