Identifying US bayonet and restore

I have a bayonet was handed down to me. Was my grandfathers from ww2. The blade is 9.5" and the blade is marked PAL with a circle around it and below that it say US with a circle in the middle with lines coming out the top. It is hard to see the writing but don't want to touch it just yet. I am trying to identify it and get any info on it. So far, it looks like it was US issued and made for the M1 garand.

Next, it is pretty rusty. I would like to restore it but don't want to degrade the value. My plan would be to disassemble, put it in my electrolysis tank to de-rust, clean up the scales, glue the crack on the one scale, sharpen it up, and reassemble? What would I do to the blade, after cleaning the rust? Cold blue it or just hit it with brillo pad and oil? What would be original?

Would like to post some pics, but not seeing how to upload.
