Idiotic question regarding friction folders

What the hell are they, and how do they work?

It's one thing about knives I've never bothered to research.

I don't have searching capabilities on this site yet, and Wikipedia has failed me once again.

Anyone like to shed some light on this for me?

They are folders without any lock of backspring to keep them open, relying only on friction. Razors are a good example.
 
The Svord Peasant knife is a good example of a friction folder. it's two slabs of wood held together with screws. the pressure from the wood slabs holds the blade in place. the extended tang will keep the knife from closing on you when you hold it.
