off topic

Well, I'm putting together a shop and bought my first belt grinder yesterday. It's a Grizzly something or other that weights roughly five million pounds and has one hp that spins the belt really fast. I got it home and started playing with it and all of a sudden everything in the garage shut off. So I check the box and none of the fuses had blown. I have no idea whats wrong.

You will probably find that the springs could be 5160.Grind a piece down thin and heat till non magnetic and quinch in oil.put in a vice and snap it in half.If it hardens to where a file just skates across without biting it should make good knives.I'm sure if you look through the archives and a great many recent posts here you will find that most reccommend using a known steel.
Not sure about the power problem.

I agree with Gouge. Most vehicle springs seem to be 5160, and make good knives. If the weight of a dumptruck didn't break it, it's probably pretty good steel if it will get hard. -chris

The biggest majority of leaf springs are 5160 but a few are 1084 now days..Either will make you a freat edge holding Blade..
Does the garage have it's own breaker box?if so check the breaker from the house that is going to the shop.I have had this happen a few times myself  as I have one in the house running the box in the shop.
Good luck, let us see a picture when you get a knife completed will you please.

Nothing new to contribute on the identification. Like everyone else said, it's likely 5160, occasionally 1084 or 1095.
My Grizzly blows my breaker all the time. If I lean into it too hard or turn up the CD player too loud it draws too many amps and trips the breaker. It also draws a much larger load as it starts up. I'd check to see what else resides on the same circuit. You could be sharing amperage with your kitchen or air conditioner, and there's not much left over after either of those.

if u live in cold places and they salt the roads, hey, even the tires would taste salty!!

Sorry could not resist that.

Do u mean grind to clean a patch and lick the cleaned patch?:) :D
